I looked at my bathroom counter this morning and realized that I buy very few commercially-manufactured beauty products anymore. Mixed up in baby food jars and other reused containers, my daily arsenal consists of homemade shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, toothpaste/tooth whitener, lip balm, lip gloss, dry skin salve, and solid perfume. The goats milk soap I buy is locally made by a non-profit goat rescue farm. And my kids use a lot of the same stuff I do. I started making my own beauty products because I'm cheap, and I couldn't stand the idea of paying retail prices for things that I could easily make, and make better, for much less.
When searching the web for rag curl directions, I came across creepy child beauty pageant blogs that said "cut some fabric, wet your hair, roll it up, tie it". Do that and you will cry from the result. A fresh wave of militancy in England’s schools was heralded by the biggest classroom union today, as it backed strikes to oppose the growth of academies and local pay bargaining for teachers. Strike ballots should be held in every school planning to become an academy and all those that are already academies where pay and conditions had been changed, the National Union of Teachers (NUT) decided. Its annual conference in Torquay also agreed that industrial action should be co-ordinated among schools within local authority areas or with neighbouring schools if possible. Separate industrial action, including a national strike, was also endorsed by the conference in protest at the Government’s moves towards dismantling national pay bargaining for teachers and other public sector workers.
