The first step I took in building the frame was to find an old steel frame from which to cut a head tube, bottom bracket shell, and dropouts, as these parts all need to be metal. You can buy these parts individually, but taking them from an existing frames spares you from having to build you own jig and worrying about alignment. Horizontal dropouts are good, since they give you room to adjust the alignment of the wheel. Building A Bamboo Bike. I left sinking the seatpost for last for better or worse.
Start with some kind of seatpost or seat tube shim. Sinking a few inches of a real seat post (not the seat tube that attaches to) will increase the strength of your bamboo seat post (a shim will not provide much support). I went with a steel seat tube 28 x 9/6 x 650 mm from Nova Cycles. This fits the extra seat post I had laying around. When you are cutting your poles make sure that you have enough room between the top of your bamboo seat tube and the nearest node to sink your metal seat tube.

This is probably the most common threading and diameter. NOTE: this shell did not end up being wide enough for rear disk brake clearance… Note that the height of the shell also counts. Make sure that you decide which bottom braket you want to use and choose your shell accordingly. You can get the metal components from a frame-building supplier like Nova Cycles or harvest them off a junk frame. Once cut each joint needs to be mitered down so that it fits perfectly and snugly around the component you will be epoxying it to. My bamboo was pretty hard, so I ate through a few dremel bits during the mitering process. Once each piece of bamboo has been cut and mitered to relative perfection, it’s time to start heat treating the bamboo poles. Bamboo is a grass made up of sugars and starches so heating the poles caramelizes these sugars/starches and strengthens the poles, this helps to add additional strength, to the frame and it also helps remove moisture and the waxy outer layer from the poles, while darkening the poles aesthetically.

Hi langsen, Regarding structural properties of different bamboo species, unfortunately I have found little info that truly emcompasses every aspect about the hundreds of possible craft and construction species, and the info I've seen has been of fairly general analysis with little details of growing conditions etc.
Compound this with the fact that a very small number of species materials are available commercially in the US, most imported, though there are hundreds of species growing in horticultural environments. Other species in different parts of the world are available on a mostly local/regional basis. When harvesting bamboo, one thing I notice is the great variability of culm quality in a grove. This is most evident in a wild grove in which there is a great deal of competition for growing space among the mass of culms, living and dead, and difference between that which is growing at the outside periphery or interior of the grove.
