VirtualConstructor (COHIBIT) At Volkwagen's Autostadt in Wolfsburg, two virtual characters, Jara and Taron, invite visitors to build model cars with real car pieces. Using camera and RFID technology for input, the two characters seamlessly interact with the real world. They are controlled using statecharts, modelled in our Scenemaker tool. The project was also presented at CeBIT-07.
EMBOTS: Embodied Agents Research Group
Relational Agents are computer agents designed to form long-term, social-emotional relationships with their users. We are investigating the use of these agents in task domains in which human-agent relationships actually improve task outcomes, such as in coaching, counseling, psychotherapy and healthcare.

GRETA: Embodied Conversational Agent
Greta is a real-time three dimensional embodied conversational agent with a 3D model of a woman compliant with MPEG-4 animation standard. She is able to communicate using a rich palette of verbal and nonverbal behaviours. Greta can talk and simultaneously show facial expressions, gestures, gaze, and head movements. Two standard XML languages FML and BML allows the user to define her communicative intentions and behaviours. Greta can be used with different external TTS softwares. Currently she can speak various languages: English, Italian, French, German, Swedish and Polish. The Teachable Agents Project combines research from computer science, psychology, and education to develop computer-based learning environments. These environments utilize animated pedagogical agents to facilitate science learning and the development of self-regulated learning skills. The use of animated agents allows us to extend the cognitive scaffolding provided by various computer tools and representations (e.g., searchable text, simulations, concept maps, etc.) by embedding them in productive and motivating social-constructive interactions (e.g., peer teaching, collaboration, and assessment). Recent work has focused on our Betty's Brain system in which middle school students learn by teaching an agent about a river ecosystem. Students study online text materials to acquire background knowledge, teach this information to Betty, and then assess her understanding using questions and quizzes.
