An exhibit from Tracy Collins, Atlantic Yards DeConstructed, opens Sept. 28. As predicted, Times reports on how Atlantic Yards opponents are exhausted by losses, neglects to cite court win, other news validating critique. I can't say I didn't predict it, the New York Times feature today headlined Opponents of Atlantic Yards Are Exhausted by a Long, Losing Battle.
The Times, I wrote last month, would report that opponents were diminished and disempowered. Which they are--duh. Some have left the neighborhood or left town. From the Brooklyn Rail: "A Brand Called Brooklyn" My essay, A Brand Called Brooklyn, appears in the November issue of the Brooklyn Rail.
The first few paragraphs are below. “It makes me mad / and it’s such a pity / they’re trying to rename Brooklyn / “Forest City,” lamented roots rocker John Pinamonti in his fight song/elegy “The Burrow,” performed in 2007 at Freddy’s Bar & Backroom in Prospect Heights, the clubhouse of the Atlantic Yards resistance. His target: developer Forest City Ratner. On Lower East Side, New Front in Struggle to Limit Revelry Is Liquor Licenses. "Road To Brooklyn": Jay-Z's YouTube channel massages the Atlantic Yards story into "change is inevitable" and it's a "win-win" The message of Road To Brooklyn: Down By The Yards, a six-minute initial installment of a web series on Jay-Z's YouTube channel, is unsurprisingly this:change is inevitableBrooklynites--especially those associated with the music industry--are enthusiastic about the arenamarginalized opponents are the cause of delayed benefitsit's a win-win (according to Borough President Marty Markowitz) That's thanks to some artful interviewing, selective footage, and unwillingness to do journalism.
But this isn't journalism, so there's no acknowledgment of the Culture of Cheating. It's this: In the premiere episode of ROAD TO BROOKLYN, JAY Z's Life+Times looks at how the Barclays Center arena and new home of the Brooklyn Nets arena came to become a fixture in the borough. Last chance to see Atlantic Yards: [De]constructed. There's a closing reception tomorrow night for Tracy Collins's exhibit ATLANTIC YARDS: [DE]CONSTRUCTED, held in the window of the Soapbox Gallery at 636 Dean Street, across from the arena's surface parking lot.
Below, some photos depicting the exhibition, which includes time-lapse photos of the changing landscape of the Atlantic Yards footprint, including demolition and construction. It's worth a walk by, after sunset. Collins, who has contributed many photos to this blog, has done valuable documentary work. Photos below copyright Tracy Collins. Our co-founder and press spokesman Daniel Goldstein, like Norman Oder below, has had mystifying communication with Senior Editor in charge of Corrections, Greg Brock, when simply seeking corrections to errors of fact.
