The lexigrams were first developed in the early work of Dr. Duane Rumbaugh with a chimpanzee name Lana at the Yerkes Regional Primate Research Center in Atlanta, Georgia. Connecting the lexigrams to a touch-screen computer interface developed by Russ RuBert revolutionized ape language research at Georgia State University's Language Research Center where the bonobos lived for 20 years. This development of nonspeech communication was also used to develop systems for children with learning disabilities.
