Картина написана в Германии в 1913 году. Будущий основоположник абстрактной живописи Василий Кандинский родился в Москве. Он получил хорошее гуманитарное образование, окончил юридический факультет московского университета. Но в 30 лет, отказавшись от карьеры профессора, уехал в Мюнхен учиться живописи.
