WorkGroup: Leonidas Paterakis, Gianluca Santosuosso , Svetlana Nesterushkina, Viraj Kataria Tutor: Marine Bagneris – Ecole Nationale Supérieure d’Architecture de Montpellier In this experiment we tried to build a physical model of a free form surface, using the technique of the geodesic curves of the surface.

Geodesic Gridshell experiment

The general definition of the geodesic curves is: “the shortes path between points on a surface” but an other definition, describes them on a more efficient way : “being γ(s) a geodesic on a surface X, and A a point on γ(s), the curvature of γ(s) in A is the minimum possible curvature among all curves passing through A and having the same tangent line of γ(s) in A”(Hilbert/Cohn-Vossen). With few words, this means that in every point of the geodesic curve, the normal vector of the surface on that point is perpendicular also with the curve. Fact that simplifies a lot the joints, wich result all the same and very simple. Initial Surface Trimmed Surface Parallel points geodesic curves 1. 080118_Consulting: polyhedrons frame structure 01.

I recently happen to write few codes for Aurel Von Richtofen who is teaching a course/seminar based on rhinoscript at the Knowlton School Of Architecture (Ohio State University) like: select points within closed polygones, points relaxation/explosion, frame along the edge of polygons, etc…Whenever I have here or there an hour to kill I often happen to re-read a previous code, clean it and often push it slightly further to render few frames – here are some random fast track results… PROTOCOL (original version):- for each closed polygons- for each faces- extract edges- add polylines: array(edge start pt, end pt,face centroide)- offset the curve (on face – toward the centroide) Many “quick fix” upgrades are possible:recursive subdivision according to face aera, membrure thickness according to edge length, etc… Like this: Like Loading...

Otto had been invited by the furniture maker and entrepreneur, John Makepeace, to participate in a wood build experiment which aimed to revitalise the use of roundwood thinnings, or wastewood.

The result was the main furniture and crafts workshop at Hooke Park, the forest-based teaching and learning addition to Makepeace’s Parnham House Furniture School, down the road in the small and picturesque village of Beaminster. Dinamo stadium. Radiolaria Pavilion: A Free-Form Structure Produced Using The World’s Largest 3D Printer. Radiolaria represents a micro-architecture experiment developed by Andrea Morgante of Shiro Studio in association with d-Shape . In 2008 d-Shape successfully developed the very first 3D mega printer that allows seamless and free-form construction of monolithic structures on a large scale. The Radiolaria pavilion aimed to define a complex, self-supporting structure that could demonstrate and test this pioneering construction technique. Measuring 3×3×3 meters, the structure represents a scale model of the final pavilion, due to be built in 2010; this pavilion will be 10 meters high and will be built in Pontedera, Italy. ‘The 21st century revolution in building technology has a name. d_shape (formerly Monolite). The mega scale free-form printer of buildings. Introduction: Since the 19th century, the construction industry has been using Portland cement to cast concrete into a formwork containing a steel cage, cementing bricks and stones using masonry.

Blender classes in ENSAG (School of Architecture of Grenoble, France) » Matthieu Dupont de Dinechin. For the third time, I’m giving a 5 days intensive training on Blender to 5th year students of the National School of Architecture of Grenoble in France.

This course is giving to the students basic knowledge about Blender with a design approach : I try to teach them how to use Blender tools to give life to their ideas and concepts directly in 3D. By modelling free forms of conceptual buildings, I try to show them that 3D tools are much more than rendering tools for architects, and can be used to sketch designs directly in 3D.

By the way, this approach makes them enjoy and have fun, but I still teach them basic knowledge on most tools they will have to use in their professionnal works. You will find here the PDF (65 pages, in French) of my classes. Some pages are still missing. The Working Group - Textile Structures for New Building - Category No. 1: Macro Architecture. An impressive design that owes much to the two relatively simple and clear design and structural elements of the arches and the membrane surfaces. 080118_Consulting: polyhedrons frame structure 01.
