Bridge Stories. The works in this exhibition celebrate the last half century of bridge projects and the engineering that has made them possible.
They also show how the use of film and photography has changed since the first decades of Ove Arup and Partners – founded in 1946. About the exhibition The show includes photography by John Donat (1933 – 2004) and Henk Snoek (1915 – 1980), both leading architectural photographers in Britain during the 1960s and 1970s. While their photographs tell a story of modern Britain, Henry Jamison ‘Jam’ Handy’s 1957 film 'The Cantilever Bridge: A Chapter in the American Bridge Story' tells a story of modern America via the construction of Tappan Zee bridge across the Hudson Bay. FRAGMENTS OF METROPOLIS. “Fragments of Metropolis”: An Exploration of Berlin’s Expressionist History. Despite being born in the same era, Expressionism embodies an entirely different architectural sensibility to other proto-modernist movements like the Bauhaus.
Its complex forms marked the creation of what we know as the modern metropolis and became one of the iconic architectural styles of the Roaring Twenties. Throughout Europe, over 1,000 expressionist buildings remain standing, yet many are forgotten and not properly preserved. For the past four years, Niels Lehmann and Christoph Rauhut have been working to document these surviving expressionist landmarks, following their previous book “Modernism London Style.” Their new book, “Fragments of Metropolis – Berlin” presents 135 remaining expressionist buildings in Berlin and the surrounding area, and with your help this incredible collection documenting the landmarks of expressionism will be published, with colorful photography and detailed maps revealing their exact locations. . © Niels Lehmann & Christoph Rauhut. Between mountains and river, the natural environment of site is characterized by wonderful landscape around. The old gymnasium building will be demolished; while we preserve the memory monument. To planning the project of Gymnasium, we connected different parameters: topography, accessibility and program. The fusion of these aspects was highly important for the concept definition- to conceive the building as an installation on the landscape. The topography is crucial in our decision since we had to deal with an enormous difference (about 14m) between the levels of the roads around the site. Lifting the carpet, we found the entrance public of gymnasium on the same level of the interior of the building. The installation activates a temporary park between the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center and D Street to create a new type of city park. Custom fabricated from welded polypropylene, the swings are designed in three different sizes so that the community can engage, exercise, and play with Swing Time as individuals or in groups. LED lighting within the swing is controlled by a custom micro-controller, signaling the swing's activity level. An internal accelerometer measures the acceleration forces of the swing. Public Space.
