Understanding How to Frame Your Creative Expertise. Again and again I see talented people with ideas they want to share – books they want to write, talks they want to give, businesses they want to launch – holding back because they think they “don’t know enough” about their topic. “After all,” they reason, “there are real experts on this out there – and I’m not one of them.” They’re thinking about the people with advanced degrees and decades of deep experience working in the field. In fact, that’s just one type of expert — “the specialist.” There are three other kinds of experts that make world-changing contributions, without specialist training. You are likely one of these four types of expert, when it comes to the work you most want to do. 1. You’ve been through something, learned a heck of a lot along the way, and now you are on fire to share what you’ve learned. But, be careful, here’s where you could get in your own way: it’s easy to over-generalize from your experience to that of others. 2. 3. 4.

Do you clutch? Do you encourage it or walk away from it? “Competition makes me better.” Jimmy Sherburne, Princeton Tiger #2, Senior Guard (and adored nephew) playing in tonight’s game against Harvard.

Go Tigers! Back story: One of my favorite quotes and people, not just because Jimmy’s one of my five talented nephews, also because he shifted my perspective on competition. Profound answer for me. I’ve never felt comfortable competing, often choosing to play smaller than my heart’s desire for so many reasons – fear of being perceived as a show-off, wanting others to like me, wanting others to feel good about themselves, early girl training in Catholic grade school, potential disappointment of losing anyway… Now, when I feel that way, I think of Jimmy and remember that giving my best when up against any other person or team, makes us all better. A rising tide lifts all boats.

Facebook is filled with Black Friday updates, holiday recipes, and my favorite – the gratitude posts. I can feel a deeper sense of gratitude and appreciation filling my heart and I love that! It makes any challenge I come across all the more meaningful, as a reminder that I am lucky, blessed, fortunate — pick your favorite word, they all fit for me — to be able to have these challenges because it means I’m still alive when so many others are not.

It means I am dealing with “situations” that others would rather have than their own. It means that I’m able to write this message and share it with you. Another Thanksgiving favorite is making “Sweet Smile Soup.” You’ll definitely want a big soup pot. Here’s a link to a pdf of “Sweet Smile Soup.” Sweet Smile Soup Ingredients Instructions. Buckminster Fuller - Leadership By Design. Leadership Principles of Buckminster Fuller by Medard Gabel and Jim Walker © 2006, All Rights Reserved How did he accomplish this? What were the tools of leadership that he employed? Fuller himself often used the phrase “comprehensive anticipatory design science” to describe the far-reaching scope of his work and research efforts. In this article, we introduce a framework of leadership which we call “comprehensive anticipatory design leadership”.

Through a careful study of Fuller’s writings, inventions, and methodologies what emerges is a powerful blueprint for problem-solving leadership in an age of rapid change – a leadership approach that has implications far beyond the field of technological innovation. So what can Fuller’s approach to life, change, technology, and design teach us about leadership? This was no mere platitude – but in many ways summarizes Fuller’s entire leadership philosophy. 1.

April 10th, 1865 War is Over - Lincoln's Last Portrait by Jim Walker © 2006, All Rights Reserved Much like the current generation of high-tech moguls who have been known to send e-mails at all hours of the night, the stories of Lincoln spending late nights at the war room telegraph office answering his t-mail messages are well documented by historians. "As president, Lincoln worked intimately with the developer of telegraph in America, Joseph Henry, the president of the Smithsonian Institution. These demands for "clarity and concision" brought about by the new technology forced a new "telegraphic" style of speech, of which Lincoln became a master.

The e-mail revolution we are currently experiencing is also placing new demands on how we communicate with each other. 1. Before you start writing, ask yourself what outcome you are trying to achieve. 2. 3. Do you remember any of the e-mails you read today? 4. 5. 1. Social Networks and Benjamin Franklin.

By Jim Walker Publisher in the ity of hiladelphia Copyright © o it was from these humble eginnings that sprang one of the first and greatest of American success stories - enjamin ranklin: Printer, Writer, Civic Leader, Scientist, Global Statesman, and Founding Father. Such, my Dear Reader, is the stuff of legends – a wise and witty entrepreneurial genius woven into the very fabric of our American creation mythology. Seen in another Light though, just beyond the mists of history, one glimpses something altogether more remarkable – a prodigy of social networking who by the very force of his Revolutionary networking talents helped give birth to an entire Nation.

Franklin ’s rise to prominence in Philadelphia was marked by his brilliant and entertaining writing, hard won business success, and most especially, by his genius for social organization. We met on Friday evenings. Another driver behind Franklin ’s growing network of contacts was his appointment as Deputy Postmaster General in 1753.
