A newly released special issue of the African Journal of Food, Agriculture, Nutrition, and Development (AFJAND) focuses entirely on addressing the growing aflatoxin problem in eastern Africa.

CGIAR 11/08/16 Special issue: Aflatoxins in eastern Africa

The special issue, Volume 16 No.3, was compiled by the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) with contributions from several A4NH researchers, and contains 12 peer-reviewed articles on a range of topics related to understanding and addressing aflatoxin contamination in countries throughout eastern Africa. Under the flagship on agriculture associated diseases, A4NH research offers insight into the most effective ways to control food safety risks, such as aflatoxin contamination. This work includes coordinating closely with groups committed to addressing this problem, such as the Partnership for Aflatoxin Control in Africa (PACA), as well as support for scaling proven interventions to prevent contamination in the first place, including the aflasafe biocontrol method.

FLU = Fluorescence. This study aimed to isolate fungal pathogens and to subsequently quantify aflatoxin (AF; B1 + B2 + G1 + G2) contamination in wheat crops grown in Pakistan. Accordingly, a total of 185 wheat samples were collected from different areas of Pakistan and numerous potent fungal pathogens were isolated. AF contamination attributed to the presence of intoxicating fungal pathogens and resulting metabolic activities were quantified using a high performance liquid chromatography-fluorescence detector coupled with postcolumn derivatization. Both toxigenic and atoxigenic strains used were capable of producing kojic acid, another cellular secondary product. A. fumigatus was used as a genetic model for this study. When applied independently, OG exhibits considerably higher antifungal activity compared to VT. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of OG were 0.3–0.5 mM, while that of VT were 3.0–5.0 mM in agar plate-bioassays.

The most promising strategy currently being used to reduce preharvest contamination of crops with aflatoxin is to introduce non-aflatoxin (biocontrol) A. flavus into the crop environment. Whether or not introduction of biocontrol strains into agricultural fields is enough to reduce aflatoxin contamination to levels required for acceptance of the contaminated food as fit for consumption is still unknown. There is no question that biocontrol strains are able to reduce the size of the populations of aflatoxin-producing strains but the available data suggests that at most only a four- to five-fold reduction in aflatoxin contamination is achieved.

Peanuts affected by aflatoxin Aflatoxin is the name for a group of toxins (carcinogenic compounds) that are produced by two fungi called Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus parasiticus. These toxins occur naturally and have been found in a wide range of commodities (including peanuts) used for animal and human consumption. Depending on the levels, the toxins can severely affect the liver and they are a known human carcinogen (i.e. causes cancer). In many developing countries aflatoxin is a major health risk to humans and animals due to the high levels of contaminated product consumed.

In Australia aflatoxin is not a health risk because of the thorough testing done at various stages along the food chain and the effective technology and procedures employed by agribusinesses to eliminate contaminated product.
