Colletotrichum isolates from soybean plants with anthracnose symptoms were studied from different regions and time periods in Brazil using molecular, morphological and pathogenic analyses. Methods and Results Bayesian phylogenetic inference of GAPDH, HIS3 and ITS-5.8S rDNA sequences, the morphologies of colony and conidia and inoculation tests on seeds and seedlings were performed. All isolates were clustered only with Colletotrichum truncatum species in three well-separated clusters. Conclusion The identification of C. truncatum in the sampled isolates evidenced it being the only causal agent of soybean anthracnose in Brazil until 2007, with relevant genetic, morphological and pathogenic variability as well as a broad geographical origin.

Le laboratoire de diagnostic d’Agroscope Changins-Wädenswil ACW a mis en évidence le pathogène Colletotrichum acutatum, qui n’avait pas encore été recensé sur cette plante. La dryade fait partie des rosacées et est originaire de l’Amérique du nord. Elle est cultivée en Europe principalement comme plante ornementale. To evaluate a qualitative molecular method to readily distinguish between these two species, Restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLP) of a 1-kb intron of the glutamine synthetase (GS) gene was evaluated utilizing representative isolates from a world-wide collection. Unique band patterns of the 1-kb GS intron were obtained for C. acutatum (two fragments with 600 and 350 bp) and C. gloeosporioides (four fragments with 238–340, 252–254, 204, and 108–116 bp) based on PstI enzyme digestion of the amplified PCR product.
