The term "wolfdog" is preferred by most of the animals' proponents and breeders because the domestic dog was taxonomically recategorized in 1993 as a subspecies of Canis lupus, which includes gray wolves. (By extension, a wolfdog is also a member of Canis lupus.) The American Veterinary Medical Association and the United States Department of Agriculture refer to the animals as wolf–dog hybrids.[1] Rescue organizations consider any dog with wolf heritage within the last five generations to be a wolfdog, including some established wolfdog breeds.[2][unreliable source?]

Wolfdog FAQ, Do wolfdog puppies mature at the same rate as regular dog pups?

Mentally wolves may take a little longer to fully mature than dogs of equal size. I have watched Alaskan Malamutes, Siberian Huskies and other northern breeds mature, and found they are a little more clumsy at an early age than wolf pups, malamutes in particular. This may be due to their heavier bone. Siberian pups are a little more physically adept at an early age than wolf pups. The Inuit dog pups I raised were a little more wolflike in their early shyness and strong reactions toward novel stimuli. In terms of critical periods, however, dogs have an expanded window of opportunity to begin socialization to any creature or situation. With dogs you can start to handle the pups later and still produce animals that are not too fearful of people and novel stimuli. Many people assume it takes a wolf longer to sexually mature than a dog, but we don't really find that to be true.

Then, ask yourself several questions: * Why do I want a wolfdog, as opposed to a similar breed such as a husky or malamute? What would I be gaining, besides the ability to brag that "he's part wolf"? The novelty of that will wear off, and you'll want to be sure that when it does, there are enough things you love about these animals to take its place. * How much wolf content is best for me? * What is your home situation? * How secure is your fencing? * What do you plan on doing with your new companion? * How about YOU--your physical strength, and your strength of character? * Do I know how to tell if the animal is really 94% wolf, like the breeder says? * Do I know what I'm getting myself into? ~They are highly destructive... we're not talking sneakers and the kids' action figures, we're talking upholstery and woodwork.
