Epidemiology and Public Health. Mental Health Sciences. Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience. Please read our detailed guide for potential PhD students. If you are interested in PhD research with one of the ICN Research Groups, the first step is to email the relevant Group Leader (you must attach both a brief outline of your interests/research plans, and a CV). The ICN has a large and active community of PhD students (see below for a list of current students). We are an interdisciplinary Institute situated within the School of Life and Medical Sciences at UCL. Faculty at the ICN are drawn from many different research divisions and departments, including the Division of Psychology & Language Sciences, the Institute of Neurology and the Wellcome Trust Centre for Neuroimaging.

The ICN is a central part of UCL Neuroscience, so we are able offer a wide range of potential PhD funding opportunities (see below). Some are associated with specific divisions and research departments, while others are broader based programmes of study. Other sources of funding you may wish to consider. Clinical, Educational and Health Psychology. Child Health.

MSc in UK

Department of Psychiatry» Research. The Department of Psychiatry is part of the School of Clinical Medicine in the University of Cambridge. It is recognised as an internationally leading centre of research in several aspects of psychiatry. In the most recent UK Government Research Assessment Exercise (2008) we achieved the highest quality ratings for the strength-in-depth of our research over the period since the previous RAE in 2001, where we were rated as 5*. See the results here. In 2010 the Times Higher Education Supplement ranked Cambridge first in European Psychiatry and Psychology over the decade. Strategy The overall research objective of the Department is to combine a detailed neuroscientific understanding of the brain mechanisms for cognition and symptoms with a broad awareness of genetic and phenotypic variability in the population over the course of the life-cycle.

Day-to-day research activity is led by our principal investigators, who often work in one or more of our major research groups. Key research themes. Department of Experimental Psychology: Dr. J. Russell. Department of Experimental Psychology: Research. Centre for Speech, Language and the Brain, University of Cambridge » Research. Behavioural and Clinical Neuroscience Institute. Neuroscience - Nilli Lavie. Nilli Lavie Attention and Cognitive control My research group focuses on the psychological and neural mechanisms of attention and distraction, cognitive control, visual awareness, working memory and emotion. We have a special focus on investigating information processing capacity and the effects of different types of information load on brain activity, cognitive function and task performance, neural correlates of awareness, executive frontal control of attention emotion and behavior.

We also study individual differences in attention abilities. To study these issues we use behavioral experiments and visual psychophysics combined with functional MRI and transcranial magnetic stimulation all in human subjects. PhD projects are developed together with the individual student in any area of our research interests. Muggleton, N. Beck , D. De Fockert J. More: Back to list of supervisors. Neuroscience - Sarah-Jayne Blakemore. Sarah-Jayne Blakemore Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience, UCL www.icn.ucl.ac.uk/sblakemore The social brain and its development My group's research focuses on the social brain, that is the network of brain regions involved in understanding other people's minds and in self-awareness. The main focus of our research is on how these processes develop in the human brain, in particular during the period of adolescence.

A second focus of our research is on social cognitive deficits in autism spectrum disorders. Dumontheil, I, Houlton, R, Christoff, K, Blakemore, S-J. ‎ Hillebrandt, H., Sebastian, C., Blakemore, S.J. Sleep plays a vital part in our everyday life and affects our daily mood, performance, social life and well-being. Sleep is the product of an interaction between multiple brain structures and neurotransmitter systems. Two main regulatory processes are involved in producing daily sleep-wake cycles that permits us to stay awake and alert during the day and to sleep throughout the night: A circadian process, which adjusts the period of sleep to a certain time relative to the environmental light-dark cycle, and a homeostatic process, whereby a wake-depended build-up of sleep propensity increases during the day and dissipates during sleep. Our research interests focus on the understanding of the contributions to both normal and dysfunctional regulation of sleep at the behavioural, molecular and environmental level.

Our lab undertakes multidisciplinary and translational studies in both the real world and the sleep laboratory. Themes — Neuroscience. Department of Psychiatry — Department of Psychiatry.
