ONLINE EDUCA Debate - ONLINE EDUCA BERLIN 2010

This year, on Thursday December 1st, we were discussing the effect of new technology on freedom and the potential consequences for education. The motion was: ‘This house expresses its concern about the effect developments in technology are increasingly having on personal liberty and believes this will have serious consequences for learning in the future.’ Conference participants were invited by the chair, former British parliamentarian Harold Elletson, to air their views and, at the end of the debate, to take a vote. There has been increasing discussion surrounding the freedom which new technological communication devices and methods can provide.

Types of collective intelligence Collective intelligence is a shared or group intelligence that emerges from the collaboration and competition of many individuals and appears in consensus decision making in bacteria, animals, humans and computer networks. It can also be understood as an emergent property from synergies among 1) data/info/knowledge, 2) software/hardware; and 3) experts and others with insight that continually learns from feedback to produce (nearly) just in time knowledge for better decisions than these elements acting alone. Collective consciousness was a term coined in psychology by the French sociologist Émile Durkheim (1858–1917) to refer to the shared beliefs and moral attitudes which operate as a unifying force within society. [ 1 ] One might recommend collective conscience as a superior translation of Durkheim's concept, in part due to the busy association of the word "consciousness" with both Marxist and Freudian thought, but also as "a conscience for Durkheim is pre-eminently the organ of sentiments and representations; it is not the rational organ that the term consciousness would imply." They’ll work with others with whom they have few links, and teams will include people outside the control of the organization,” “In addition, simulation, visualization and unification technologies, working across yottabytes of data per second, will demand an emphasis on new perceptual skills.” - Tom Austin, Vice President and Gartner Fellow Gartner points out that the world of work will probably witness ten major changes in the next ten years.
