Mr. Scruff. Mr. Scruff is the recording name of Andy Carthy (born 10 February 1972,[1]), a British electronic music producer and DJ. He lives in Stretford, Greater Manchester, and studied fine art at the Psalter Lane campus of Sheffield Hallam University. Before he could make a living from his music alone, he worked as a shelf-stacker in the Hazel Grove branch of Kwik Save.[2] His stage name was inspired by his scruffy facial hair, as well as his trademark loose-lined drawing style. He has been DJing since 1994, at first in and around Manchester then nationwide. He is known for DJing in marathon sets (often exceeding six hours), his eclectic musical taste, his love of a "nice cup of tea" and the quirky home-produced visuals and animations associated with his music. Career[edit] In 2004, Mr. July 2008 saw the release of Southport Weekender Volume 7, a double album released in the Southport Weekender series, recorded in a purpose-built holiday village in Southport, Merseyside.

Mr. Style[edit] Mr. Mr. Skalpel. History[edit] In 2000, after interviewing DJ Vadim for a Polish hip hop magazine, Skalpel discussed samples, obscure breaks and the Polish music scene with him. That led to a combined tour with Skalpel and Vadim's live band, The Russian Percussion, during which they performed with four turntables.

Later that year, Skalpel released a demo CD entitled "Polish Jazz", which gained praise from the Polish music press, and they were subsequently picked up by the UK independent record label, Ninja Tune. In 2001, they released the "Virtual Cuts" mixtape, which was composed of two live sessions. Between 2002 and 2004, five of their live DJ mix sets were aired on Ninja Tune's Solid Steel radio show. Skalpel aim to resurrect the spirit of 60s and 70s Polish jazz, using samples to re-work it. "The Polish music scene is very poor at the moment. Skalpel's 2003 EP, "Sculpture" sold out upon release. Skalpel has released two albums.

Vibert began his musical career as a member of the Hate Brothers, only later branching out into his own compositions. Vibert has recorded under several different aliases, most notably Plug and Wagon Christ. Early Years: 1990s[edit] Vibert's first musical output was in a variety of bands, including a punk act called Five Minute Fashion and later a Beastie Boys-esque group called the Hate Brothers, but he quickly moved into the low-cost environment of solo electronic composition.

Although Vibert originally had no intention of ever releasing any of the recordings, his reputation as a creative young voice in his field created a demand for his work. Vibert originally became involved in electronic music through his interest in hip-hop as well as the environment of bedroom experimentalism associated with the swelling late 1980s UK dance scene. 2000 and onwards[edit] Discography[edit] Wagon Christ - Mr. Mukatsuku. Fin can recall "the one thing of his dad’s that Fin Greenall wasn’t allowed to touch was the old Martin acoustic guitar. " In an interview, Greenall remembers "It was his one possession where he said, 'everything in this house is owned by everybody – apart from that.'"[1] Their presence had an impact on his future in music. "The great thing about growing up in a house where music is a big factor... was the fact that music being part of your life was a perfectly natural thing.

" "It was definitely about wanting to be part of a revolution that I could call my own," he recalls. Coldcut. Beyond their work as a production duo, Coldcut are the founders of Ninja Tune, an independent record label in London, England (with satellite offices in Montreal and Los Angeles) with an overall emphasis on encouraging interactive technology[5] and finding innovative uses of software.[6] The label’s first releases (the first four volumes of DJ Food - 'Jazz Brakes') were produced by Coldcut in the early 90s, and composed of instrumental hip-hop cuts that led the duo to help pioneer the trip-hop genre,[7] with artists such as Funky Porcini, The Herbaliser and DJ Vadim.[8] History[edit] 1980s[edit] Though Black had joined Kiss FM with his own mix-based show, the pair eventually joined forces on its own show later in 1987 called Solid Steel.

The eclectic show became a unifying force in underground experimental electronic music [10] and is still running to date, celebrating 25 years in 2013. The single "People Hold On" became another UK Top 20 hit. 1990s[edit] The album Let Us Play! Coldcut - more beats and pieces.

Funki Porcini - Dubble. Funki Porcini - The Great Drive By. Ninja Tune. Inspired by a visit to Japan, Black & More primarily created Ninja Tune in 1990 as a means to escape the creative control of major labels,[4] and to act as a vehicle to release music of a more underground nature,[5] free from the restraints that were put on them via their brief stints with Arista and Big Life.[6] Over the last 24 years, the visionary[7] label has since blossomed to become consistently heralded and “reliably excellent”,[8] keeping a widespread focus on signing a diverse range of uncompromising artists,[9] encouraging interactive technology,[10] embracing the audio-visual world, creating their own publishing company (Just Isn’t Music), and finding innovative uses of software.[11] History[edit] 1990-1999[edit] After Coldcut’s success with their first label, their prophetically titled Ahead Of Our Time, contractual issues prevented them to release anything under their own name.

In 1995, Matt Black created ‘Pipe,’ Ninja’s first website. 2000-2010[edit] Kid Koala. Biography[edit] San is also an illustrator and an artist, having designed all of his own album covers. A comic book he drew is included as the liner notes to Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. Following the release of the album, Kid Koala toured extensively, during which time he opened for some of his favorite artists, including Radiohead and Björk.[6][7] He has also released a full length graphic novel, Nufonia Must Fall, which includes a soundtrack CD he composed.

This album was supported by a cabaret-style tour throughout North America, Europe and Australia known as The Short Attention Span Theatre, which featured an unpredictable opening act—3 Djs (Kid Koala, P-Love, and DJ Jester the Filipino Fist) on 8 turntables set up like a band, and a bingo game at intermission among other tremendously quirky surprises. San released the Kid Koala album, entitled Your Mom's Favorite DJ (ZENCD127), on 25 September 2006. DVDs[edit] The Herbaliser. Jake Wherry has also recorded solo tracks as The Meateaters, released on the Parisian Big Cheese label, and has worked with The Propheteers. Ollie Teeba is also part of Soundsci with Jonny Cuba of Dynamic Syncopation, Audessey ex-Mass Influence, U-George The Hemisphere and Oxygen Sputnick Brown History[edit] Wherry and Teeba met years later at Wherry's Traintrax studio, and began recording together, collaborating with DJ Malachi, Kaidi Tatham of Bugz in the Attic and Ralph Lamb of Easy Access Orchestra.

They developed a jazzy instrumental style of hip hop, due to an absence of available rappers. They passed their recordings on to Ninja Tune bosses Matt Black and Jonathan More of Coldcut and were signed shortly thereafter. Inspired by the funk bands of previous decades, rather than performing simply with turntables, Jake Wherry decided to take a seven piece band on tour, which included Tatham, Lamb, Andrew Ross, Micah Moody Jnr and percussionist Patrick Dawes. Discography[edit] Albums[edit] DJ Vadim. DJ Vadim is a prolific DJ and producer, born in Leningrad, USSR (now Saint Petersburg, Russia), raised in London and currently residing in both New York and Berlin,[citation needed] whose music combines hip hop, soul, reggae and electronica. He has been described as "one of the few artists creating genuinely new work in the Hip-Hop field"[1] and an artist who "cannot be ignored".[1] Career[edit] In 1994, Vadim founded his own independent record label, Jazz Fudge, but signed to Ninja Tune the following year, before his current label BBE, in 2007.

Aside from DJ-ing and producing, he has also worked as in A&R and promotion, as well as a radio presenter on the BBC's "Around The World In Eight Relays" programme. [citation needed] In addition to his regular album releases, he has also recorded under the names "Andre Gurov" and "Little Aida" and has appeared as a member of the various artists project The Isolationist. Members[edit] Although keeping their hand in as DJs on the albums, Black and More couldn't perform DJ sets twice in one night under the aliases of both Coldcut & DJ Food, so they handed the mantle of live performances over to PC and Strictly Kev.

Later, PC became so involved with The Cinematic Orchestra that he decided to quit DJ Food, leaving Strictly Kev as the sole director of the project. Blockhead (music) James Anthony "Tony" Simon, better known by his stage name Blockhead, is an American hip hop producer based in Manhattan, New York. Simon was born and raised in Manhattan. He is the son of the late Sidney Simon, a well-known sculptor in New York City, and Renee Adriance, a social worker.

He has one brother and five half siblings. [2][1] From a young age, he loved hip hop--both the lyrical and musical aspects. In his early teens, he and his friends made a group called the Overground where Simon first started making music. [3] An aspiring MC, he enrolled in Boston University in 1994. He only remained at Boston University for one year, but in that year Simon's real music career began when he first met and starting working with Aesop Rock who was also a student at BU. At this point Simon put aside his ambition to be a MC and focused on producing music.[1] Dour Candy (with Billy Woods) (2013)Capture the Sun (with Illogic) (2013) Let's Get Serious (2003) BlockHead - Insomniac Olympics. Blockhead - Grape Nuts and Chalk Sauce. Andreya Triana. Biography[edit] An experimental and self-taught singer and songwriter originally hailing from South East London, Andreya Triana grew up submerged in a multicultural atmosphere. A unique vocalist, Andreya began singing at the tender age of 7, taking influence from the sights and sounds of inner-city London. Her early love and passion for music would see her locked in her bedroom for hours on end writing poetry, making homemade mix tapes and recording tracks - utilizing two battered cassette decks to record harmonies.

Her early love of improvisation would warp and change over the years, hugely influencing her 'Freeflo Sessions' - a hypnotic one woman show using a sampler to loop vocals, percussive sounds and beats live. To date she has taken her Freeflo Sessions worldwide, dazzling audiences far and wide with her cutting edge and soulful performances.

After their collaboration for Black Sands, Green produced Andreya Triana's debut album Lost Where I Belong. The first single off the most recent Bonobo album, "Cirrus", was given its worldwide debut on Gilles Peterson's BBC Radio 6 programme on 19 January 2013.
