Editorial multitasker With his reputation as a star illustrator, Franquin is often called upon by Spirou’s editor or publisher to illustrate incidental editorial items within the magazine's pages. And this is where the artist’s endlessly fertile imagination becomes as much of a hindrance as a help, as he finds himslef devising complicated solutions to problems that, initially, looked simple enough. As a result, such ‘incidental’ efforts end up creating formidable amounts of work in their own right. Beach contests, sports tournaments, contents pages or cover concepts: Franquin can’t help but bring all his talents to bear on every aspect of the editorial process.
