Patterns that I have developed. My step outs are sometimes crazy, I usually find myself using a new pattern in a zentangle and then try to figure out how someone else could do the same.

Doodles and Zentangle

People have always made marks, and marks for their own sake are what doodling is at its heart. But doodling now has a brand name - 'Zentangle (R)'. This has generated quite a bit of discussion on the internet, so let's look at some of the most talked-about issues. What is the difference between a 'doodle' and a 'Zentangle'? The classic definition of a doodle - certainly the kind that people like to interpret - is a drawing done without full attention, while the person is otherwise occupied. Zentangle 'inventors' emphasize this focused attention, and make it a point of difference.

It could be considered that the deliberate and formulaic approach used by Zentangle is superior, but while the end results appear more finished - often with a polished 'op art' look - they tend to lack the immediacy and signatory qualities of true doodling. Why are 'Zentangles' Trademarked? Do I Need Instructor Certification? No. PARADOX, and then some. A Tutorial. Here are Zentangle's instructions for the tangle Paradox, from the February 2008 newsletter.

PARADOX, and then some. A Tutorial

Paradox is one of my favorite tangles and I seem to do it rather well. Perhaps those two things are related! Munchin - alternate steps. Munchin, and then some.

Munchin - alternate steps

Munchin is one of Zentangle's official tangles, designed by Molly Hollibaugh, Maria's daughter. Munchin is based on triangles and has a nice, slightly mottled look when finished. You can see Molly's instructions, which begins with some random dots, in the Zentangle newsletter here. I had forgotten that method until I taught Munchin to a class that included two CZTs, who reminded me about it! Because any tangle is usually drawn in an odd-shaped space provided by the string, I had come up with another way to draw Munchin, which I have been teaching. Ultimately, in order to draw Munchin, you need your space sub-divided into triangles. Here are some odd shapes you might have, courtesy of your string: three, four, and five sides. Findings - Discovering the Virtues of a Wandering Mind

Psychology textbooks warned it could lead to . Neuroscientists complained that the rogue bursts of activity on brain scans kept interfering with their studies of more important mental functions. But now that researchers have been analyzing those stray thoughts, they’ve found daydreaming to be remarkably common — and often quite useful. A wandering mind can protect you from immediate perils and keep you on course toward long-term goals. Sometimes daydreaming is counterproductive, but sometimes it fosters creativity and helps you solve problems. Consider, for instance, these three words: eye, gown, basket. Mind wandering, as psychologists define it, is a subcategory of daydreaming, which is the broad term for all stray thoughts and fantasies, including those moments you deliberately set aside to imagine yourself winning the lottery or accepting the Nobel.
