MUMBAI: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has announced that the state government is setting up AP fibre grid to help multi-system operators (MSOs) and local cable operators (LCOs) set up a multi-tenanted digital cable headend that can be utilised as “infrastructure as a service and platform as a service”.
The move is expected to help operators to apply for digital addressable system (DAS) licence and sustain their areas of operations. Andhra Pradesh has 800+ MSOs and 9,000+ LCOs across 13 districts serving 1.3 million subscribers. The CM has written to the Information and Broadcasting (I&B) Minister Arun Jaitley to extend the DAS deadline by six months beyond 31 December since Phase I of the fibre grid will be completed by June. Naidu noted that only a few MSOs in Andhra Pradesh have licence to operate in DAS-notified areas due to non-affordability of digital headends and lack of technical expertise. Star India gets 90-95 per cent MSOs to sign the new RIO. Star India has completed signing 90-95 per cent of the agreements for its reference interconnect offer (RIO) with multi-system operators (MSOs).
According to a spokesperson from Star India, the broadcaster has agreements with almost all MSO operators who have either signed the amended RIO or the old one. “And there are a few operators, who, after the TDSAT judgement, had been given the option of retaining their old CPS (cost per subscriber),” he said.
