Department(s) responsible for managing their employer brand (more than one answer is possible) Over the past seven years I have been fortunate to travel to more than 50 cities in 30 countries to share my employer branding knowledge and experience with thousands of leaders.

The No. 1 issue that continues to draw discussion and debate is whether employer branding should be a human resources or marketing function — or both! There are also a number of leaders which support the view it requires a combination of expertise from multiple functions to effectively deliver an employer brand strategy that builds value. Declining Role of HR Our global research at Employer Brand International over the past five years shows a declining role of HR in employer branding, with 46 percent of HR departments responsible for the strategy in 2009 compared to 36 percent in 2014 (see the graphic). The survey findings also show clear evidence that the leadership of employer brands is evolving into other functions. LinkedIn user tips from an insider. How many of you are using LinkedIn (LNKD) from your smartphone or tablet rather than a laptop or (gasp) desktop computer? According to LinkedIn, 43 percent of users are updating their profiles, reaching out to new contacts and generally getting better connected while they're on the go.

"We get it. It can be hard to search for a job while you're at your desk, not to mention the potentially awkward conversation with your current boss if he sees you," says Krista Canfield, spokesperson for LinkedIn. That's why with all the company's apps you don't have to wait until the weekend or after-hours to job-search or network. And now the newly updated LinkedIn Profile on Mobile app, which launched Tuesday, allows you to update your profile and view others' more easily on mobile devices. Recently, CBS MoneyWatch talked with Krista Canfield, LinkedIn's spokesperson, to get her best tips for using LinkedIn and what's coming next for the company.

CBS MoneyWatch: Why is the new app revamp so important? US Sees Fourth Month of Job Gains over 200,000 - WANTED Technologies. Photo Joao Rodrigues had been listening and holding his tongue. For a day and a half, brand managers, ad agency creative types and strategists had gathered in airy conference rooms and around cafeteria tables in Facebook’s Madison Avenue offices, filling up whiteboards and scratch pads with one heartfelt or clever tagline after another.

The idea was to come up with a big, sweeping campaign to market MegaRed, a premium alternative to fish oil pills, to users of the social network. Each ad had to be so compelling that it would get people to stop scrolling through their news feeds — what Facebook calls a thumbstopper. But from where Mr. Rodrigues sat, as the guy who would write the checks for the proposed campaign, the Facebook people seemed to be missing an essential point. Finally, with some exasperation, Mr. Ever since it began selling ads 10 years ago, Facebook has been combating doubts about its value to marketers. Both Facebook and marketers have strong reason to explore its potential. Matteo Achilli The Italian Zuckerberg. LinkedIn Ads Can Be Tested and Targeted Like Never With Direct Sponsored Content. How Your Company Can Attract Top Tech Talent. We are living in a technology-infused world — hence the rising demand for top tech talent. Companies are fighting with one another while attempting to attract the best candidates, and young tech wizards are getting lost in the process. With so many jobs opening daily, how can your company stand out? Studies show that millennials are most attracted to companies that allow for flexible schedules, stress the importance of people and culture and, of course, offer hefty salaries and benefit packages (although, surprisingly, money is not at the top of most job searchers' lists). Thankfully for tech buffs, tech salaries are rising — in 2012, salaries rose 5.3% to top $83,000 — a factor that makes the competition even more cutthroat.

There are a few companies that are attracting millennial talent extremely well by hosting hackathons and marketing themselves strategically: Google, Facebook, Yahoo, Microsoft, Evernote, Bitly and Skype, to name a few. Have something to add to this story? How Can We Make Recruiting Better? Recruiting is broken. In fact, it is so broken that almost no one I have ever talked to about the subject has offered up a point of disagreement. Not one person has said, “I love recruiting” or “We find that recruiting works just great for us.” Among the Valley’s cognoscenti, today’s startup truism is that recruiting is the most important function of a great CEO.

If that is so, why is it so hard to do it well, and why does it have to be so universally despised? While it may be obvious, let me start by giving a couple of case studies of the sorts of recruiting behavior that I think are endemic to the problem. The first comes from a conversation I had with a friend this past week who had recently moved to San Francisco. While she didn’t seem to be particularly bothered by such an approach, I was deeply troubled.

The second example is the recruiting industry itself. In this way, recruiting becomes more of a discussion about results than an attempt to demonstrate false loyalty. Source: Facebook Is Building FB@Work. The phrase “Facebook at work” usually suggests people frittering away the day on the social network and not actually doing their jobs. But according to an anonymous source inside Facebook, the company is working on a way to put the social network into a more positive light in the office. It is building an at-work version of Facebook. “We are making work more fun and efficient by building an at-work version of Facebook,” the source says. “We will touch code throughout the stack and on all platforms (web, iOS, Android, etc.).” The source, who refers it as “FB@Work”, says the effort is based in London. What’s not clear is whether FB@Work is something being built as an internal enterprise communication platform, or whether there are ambitions to leverage Facebook to drive new business, by giving people a way to interface with the hundreds of millions of people who already use it to market their businesses and themselves — along the lines of LinkedIn.

Portrait of the 2014 LinkedIn User: How Do You Look? 5 Biggest Social Media Lessons of 2013. Close Open Photographer: Tim Robberts/Getty Images It was a big year for social media. Twitter made its successful debut on the stock market while Facebook recovered from its troubled IPO a year earlier. And that was just in the U.S. In China, which has the world's biggest population of Internet users, e-commerce giant Alibaba spent $586 million for a stake in Weibo, the country's top microblogging service and a rival to Tencent's popular WeChat instant messaging app.

All of which is to say that if 2013 showed us one thing, it's that there's a growing global business in accumulating friends and followers. Of course, similar to previous years, there were also social media gaffes and hacks mixed in, along with plenty of celebrity narcissism and, unfortunately, twerks. Among them: Social Media Can Move Markets On April 23, AP’s Twitter account was hacked, sending a fake tweet that there were “two explosions in the White House and Barack Obama is injured.”
