Great iPad Apps for Pre-K and Kindergarten! Best iphone/ipad apps for kindergarten-aged kids. Last week I shared some of my favorite apps for the preschoolers, and today I wanted to share some of my favorites for my two kindergartners. I’ve found some really great tools for my iphone that help reinforce what the kids are learning at school. At our house, we have an ipad, and we also have two iphones (the one I use as a phone, and an older model that is no longer activated but can still get apps via wifi). The kids are constantly asking to play on them . . . and since we use a timer and have mostly educational games, I feel pretty good about our moderate use of technology as a teaching tool. First things first, though: if you have a child playing on your iphone, I highly recommend some kind of a screen protector.

If you haven’t yet discovered ABCmouse.com, I highly recommend it as an educational website. The Sight Word app is fantastic for kids of all ages. ABC Tracing is a great tool for helping kids to learn letter construction. [disclosure]

A Case for Your iPad. A question I hear a lot, especially at iPad workshops, is "what case should I buy for my iPad? " My answer, unsurprisingly, is "it depends. " Do you just need something to make your iPad grippable and/or protect the screen? Do you need it HULK SMASH-proof? Do you want to attach to the back of car seats so kids can watch videos in the car? Leo has two cases for his iPad 2. It also has a velcro strap that can be used as a carrying handle, to secure the cover -- and to attach the iPad to the back of a car seat for multiple viewings of favorite videos. Caveats: The ZooGue doesn't stand up in portrait mode for reading books or other documents. For three months after the iPad shattering incident, I was leery of the ZooGue, so we switched to a Targus 360 ($60 - $65) instead. It also swivels stand position between portrait and landscape, which is excellent for those of us who like to read documents while our hands are busy.

Caveats: See that pretty blue fuzzy interior padding? Eleven Kid-Friendly iPad Cases [Video-Review] ....which get our thumbs up? Here in the Apps for iPads offices we rely on our Rocketfish iPad stands to hold our devices secure while our tiny testers play with them as they give us their feedback on apps. We have often thought of getting some cases so that the kids could be more mobile. So we set to work researching what is available, assembling feedback we got from readers and colleagues and thought we would share that with you.
