Purpose & objective Algebra is an indispensable tool for modeling complex relationships between any quantifiable variables as succinct equations used in a range of applications from theoretical science to practical innovation. The traditional approach to building familiarity with algebra has been through drill type assignments which focus on rote rather than critical thinking skills. The web program of focus is Science Gadgets, a free, open-source application that runs on browsers of any internet capable device.

Plan and teach with Khan Academy. Middle School Math Chat: Connections are Key - Getting Smart by Megan Mead - algebra, Dreambox, mathchat. The intermediate grades serve as formative years for conceptual understanding of content and emotional connection/attitude toward mathematics.

While students are learning the key concepts that will be carried with them throughout the rest of their math careers, they are also developing their love (or hate) of the subject. Competency in these foundational skills will prepare students for success, while a lack of understanding can hinder growth and motivation. Last week, Tim Hudson from DreamBox Learning joined us to chat a little about intermediate math. Motivated by the fact that these formative years are key in the development of lifelong mathematical understanding, we dove into the importance of teaching Algebra Reasoning in the early grades, how to build key connections for students and why thinking about intermediate students a little differently can help build a community of mathematicians. Reflections on Khan Blends - Getting Smart by Tom Vander Ark - blended learning, Khan Academy, math. It was a visit to Eastside College Prep in East Palo Alto that inspired Scott Ellis to “really dive into blended.”

The math class using Khan Academy also impressed 60 Minutes (here’s a short video description). Scott had five important observations 1. Framing. The teacher provided great framing at the beginning of the class. 2. 3. 4. 5. A recent SRI report on Khan Academy recapped us in nine pilot schools. Can technological tools and interventions boost math achievement? Technology has improved many aspects in our lives.

Therefore it’s natural to wonder: Can technology be used to improve a student’s math skills and close achievement gaps? Math educators endorse the use of technology The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics has made their position on the use of technology clear: “Technology is an essential tool for learning mathematics in the 21st century, and all schools must ensure that all their students have access to technology. Effective teachers maximize the potential of technology to develop students’ understanding, stimulate their interest, and increase their proficiency in mathematics.

New Common Core Math Missions Launch on Khan Academy - Getting Smart by Alison Anderson - CCSS, CUE14, Khan Academy, mathchat, Online Learning. On the keynote stage in Palm Springs, CA for this year’s CUE conference, Sal Khan announced a brand new launch for US students this afternoon.

Khan Academy is an organization committed to helping teachers and students by continually working to provide every student a personalized learning experience. This year it became clear that it was time to offer a Common Core Resource that both students and teachers could rely on in order to transition smoothly and successfully to these state standards without giving up the idea of personalized learning. The Khan team basically saw two options for developing this sort of resource: retroactively linking all their current resources to the most appropriate common core standard or go ahead and create a entire new library of content and learning objects, specifically to illustrate the Common Core standards.

With ten million unique users each month and the financial backing of some of the world's wealthiest people, perhaps no education organization has more pressure to show results than Khan Academy.

The renowned research institution, SRI International, published a detailed report on how schools are using Khan for their math classes. The study, funded by the Gates Foundation, spans two school years from 2011 to 2013 and covers nine sites that encompass 20 public, charter and independent schools. Over 70 teachers and 2,000 students in grades 5-10 participated each year. The in-depth implementation report showcases how four of the nine sites (one of which spent up to 22% of math class time on Khan) deployed the platform, diving into details such as class setup, lab models, instructional methods, schedules and student demographics.
