The Casa de las Ideas digital library is located along the canal that runs through the Tijuana Camino Verde neighborhood. The adjacent buildings, mostly residences and businesses built informally, face the same channel, where a large amount of public activity, transport, and both formal and informal business, is concentrated. Two challenges characterize this area: crime and flooding.

The proposed library is a space of just 220 square meters. Its architecture opens to a number of scenarios both inside and outside. Wiel Arets Architects — University Library + Rotation Building Duisburg – Essen. © Wiel Arets Architects . Published on July 24, 2009. Positioned at the interface between city and university centre two new compact solitaires establish an independent scale and spatial structure within their heterogonous proximity. The outspoken vertical and horizontal gesture of the volumes results in an iconographic complex whose presence goes far beyond the immediate context.

In addition, the reciprocal prelude of both the city and the campus are labeled and rise to the occasion. In correspondence to the contextual condition, the library has dual aspect access from the urban and university structure, while the rotation of the building is clearly addressed to the campus. The functional aesthetic of the seventies left its mark on the character of the entire campus. In order to strengthen the public radiation and the action at the library, two different magnitudes subdivide the taller building.

Library of Aveiro | Architectuul. 1 of 7 Description Change this Founded in 1973, the University of Aveiro, also known as UA, is a recognized national and internationally institution for its important technology center that invests in innovative areas. The quality of research especially in the area of engineering, puts it as one of the most prestigious universities in Europe.

The campus has a central lane with gardens and water lines, served by a pedestrian gallery side, separating the buildings perpendicularly to this axis. The road circulation takes place via a perimeter that serves all buildings. The Library The University Library was design by the portuguese architect Álvaro Siza Vieira. The library plays a central role in the organisation of the university campus situated on the edge of the city of Aveiro.

This baffle admits reflected light while a continuous horizontal cut at the third level assures (for those seated) a visual connection across the sait marshes extending to the horizon. Comments. Facts - Thames Valley University. Thames Valley University (TVU) is one of a number of new British universities developed from former further education institutions in the 1990s. The existing campus at Slough, developed from the 1950s on, was undistinguished, with poor public spaces and indistinct circulation routes, and isolated from the town centre by a main highway and railway line. The practice was asked to carry out a masterplan for the future development of the campus and to identify a site for the proposed learning resource centre, essentially a library but with provision for the use of computers, videos and other new information technology as well as books.

The university wanted a clearly accessible building which could be built to a tight budget and a fast construction programme. The completed building is both straightforward (in terms of its simple diagram, balancing a "warehouse" storage area with an open reading and reception space) and highly memorable. Library Delft University of Technology. Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) commissioned Mecanoo to design a library that would be the heart of the university and give a face to a campus the size of a city district. The iconic library of TU Delft, designed with the digital transition in mind, still meets expectations more than two decades after its opening.

A vast lawn opposite the Brutalist concrete auditorium is tilted at one point; the library slides into the resulting space underneath. A cone, the symbol of technical engineering, pierces the lawn and library, attaching them like a pushpin. Landscape, library and auditorium form a new unity becoming the preferred meeting place on the TU Delft international campus. Upon entering, visitors are drawn to the impressive wall of books that hangs in front of an expansive deep blue background.

The columns in the central space not only support the structure but also provide heating and ventilation, and illuminate the continuous metal ceiling that flows across all spaces. Wiel Arets won in 1997 the competition for the Library building. The library appears in this context as a solid composition of volumes, which show on the facade a play of alternating transparent and opaque panels. They are blurred by a repeated texture, printed on the glass and carved in relief on the black concrete panels. The texture is a pattern of jungle trees, which add some vertical movement to the facade composition. JO COENEN – ARCHITECTS & URBANISTS. Shiba Ryotaro Memorial Museum | Architectuul. 1 of 16 Description Change this Shiba Ryotaro was an important figure in Japanese literature after the World War II.

Characterized by a critical look at modern life, his popular historical novels and travel writings provided moral support for Japanese people after the war. His sudden death in 1996 was widely mourned and his works are still seen by many Japanese as a sort of guide to life. The museum built in memory of Shiba Ryotaro, designed by the Japanese Tadao Ando, has the aim of transmitting his message to future generations.

Built on a site in Higashiosaka, next to the house where the author lived for many years, the project for the two buildings was conceived as a single integrated whole. The original house is found in a peaceful residential area surrounded by a small, dense wood where it is said that Shiba, who was rarely seen, liked to walk and reflect. Program and design Sources Francesco Dal Co: Tadao Ando Comments. AD Classics: National Library of France / Dominique Perrault. As an edition to the developing urban project in eastern Paris, the French National Library was built in hopes to be the most modern library in the world.

The competition of 1989 that included projects from 244 internationally renowned architects was won by Dominique Perrault, who was only 36 years old. This project would be the defining design of Perrault‘s career. Read more about the history of the National Library of France after the break. Specifically designed for it’s location in the Siene Rive Gauche district, the basic concept is composed of four tall towers that define the boundaries of an esplanade, which is hollowed out of the ground to create a vast forest-garden. The four beacon-like markers with an area measuring up to 350,000 m2 were constructed on a stretch of industrial wasteland, each one comprised of wood, metal, concrete and glass. They were designed to resemble four open books all open towards one another, to imply a volume and symbolic space.

Acropoli. Musashino Art University Museum & Library / Sou Fujimoto.
