http://seal.ifi.uzh.ch/semwebchallenge s.e.a.l.: SemClip When copying and pasting data between applications using the operating system clipboard, the semantics of the transfered information is usually lost. Using Semantic Web technologies these semantics can be explicitly defined in a machine process-able way and therefore be preserved during the data transfer. In this paper we introduce SemClip, our implementation of a Semantic Clipboard that enables the exchange of semantically enriched data between desktop applications and show how such a clipboard can be used to copy and paste semantic annotations from Web pages to desktop applications.

Tracker http://projects.gnome.org/tracker/index.html Tracker is a semantic data storage for desktop and mobile devices. Tracker uses W3C standards for RDF ontologies using Nepomuk with SPARQL to query and update the data. Tracker is a central repository of user information, that provides two big benefits for the user; shared data between applications and information which is relational to other information (for example: mixing contacts with files, locations, activities and etc.). What is Tracker? What does that mean?

Open Source Semantic Desktop Is Coming Thanks to the open source NEPOMUK (Networked Environment for Personalized, Ontology-based Management of Unified Knowledge) effort, the Semantic Desktop isn't a dream; it's an emerging reality and will be here with the upcoming release of KDE 4 for the Linux desktop. "NEPOMUK is a project attempting to address what we see as a major missing component of the open source environment -- what we call 'semantic capabilities,' which you can think of as the ability to define and take advantage of the relationships between different items and types of data throughout the desktop and beyond," Stéphane Laurière, Semantic Web activities coordinator at Linux distribution Mandriva, told internetnews.com . PC users have volumes of information saved on their computers, most of it disconnected and disparate save for a basic directory system. Mandriva is an active participant in the NEPOMUK effort along with HP, IBM, SAP and others . http://www.internetnews.com/xSP/article.php/3688606/Open+Source+Semantic+Desktop+Is+Coming.htm

In computer science , the Semantic Desktop is a collective term for ideas related to changing a computer's user interface and data handling capabilities so that data is more easily shared between different applications or tasks and so that data that once could not be automatically processed by a computer could be. It also encompasses some ideas about being able to automatically share information between different people. This concept is very much related to the Semantic Web but is distinct insofar its main concern is the personal use of information.
