Mrs. Gearhart. Instructional Software - Software and Web Sites Introduction: As a technology integration advisor for the elementary level, it is my responsibility to be familiar with a wide range of software and web sites.

Mrs. Gearhart

Because of this, the software and web sites that are listed below cover a broad spectrum. In my position, I am called on to objectively evaluate software, refer teachers to web sites and software that will meet a specific objective, and quickly assess a web site’s effectiveness. As my district’s budget continues to be tight, making informed decisions on purchases has never been more important. The links below offer information on several different types of software, and links to sites that offer guidelines in evaluating software and web sites. Information Impact

How do we give students a creative, high-level learning experience that results in information literacy success? With the strong focus on the results of state mandated tests, we spend a large portion of classroom time preparing for them. It is difficult to find windows of opportunity for creative, higher-level, authentic assessments. We need these opportunities, however, to allow us to analyze a student’s level of information literacy and their ability to effectively evaluate and synthesize information. As a media specialist, I wanted to create an engaging project that focused on these higher-order skills. The Romeo and Juliet Code by Phoebe Stone Content Rating and Review

A passenger ship full of Americans is sunk by a German U-boat. Felicity reads newspaper articles of war officers being killed or taken hostage and Nazis doing terrible things to civilians and Jews. All of these things are only briefly mentioned or touched on, but the war is a central theme in the book. Sexual Content: Felicity daydreams that she could be Juliet, and Derek could be Romeo so that he might kiss her. Adult Themes: Felicity’s parents are spies in Europe during the war. Synopsis Felicity Bathburn Budwig is eleven when World War II breaks out in Europe. Though the title may convince young readers that this book belongs in the romance genre, it is actually more a mixture of WWII history, family drama, and some secret code deciphering.

I always forget how quickly the first part of the school year goes, and we sure have been BUSY! September has been filled with teaching and/or reviewing with students on how to check their own books in/out on the computer, how to keep their books safe, the Bluebonnet Award books, and Digital Citizenship. As October begins, I start getting into what I call the more “meatier” lessons…lessons that will be taught during one or two library lessons, but will also carry on throughout the entire year. First of all, for Kinder, 1st, and 2nd grade I focus on teaching the parts of a book.

In the past I’ve read books before like Karl and Carolina Uncover the Parts of a Book by Sandy Donovan or A Book Is Just Like You by Kathleen Fox to introduce or review those parts. These books do a good job, but my lesson always felt “flat” to me. I asked the kids, “If I were going to make a book, what would I need?” Welcome To The Web. What could be as powerful as the Force? The power of reading, of course. And the two will come together this October. Star Wars Reads, a celebration of Star Wars and reading, is set to return for its fifth year with a month-long campaign throughout October.

Storytelling events and activities, including author signings, readings, and games are planned for bookstores, libraries, and schools across the globe. Top publishers participating in this year’s events include Disney Publishing Worldwide, DK Books, Scholastic, Abrams, Del Rey, Egmont, and many more. “Over the past five years, the Star Wars Reads campaign has organically grown into an annual event that celebrates reading through the new and familiar stories for families and fans of all ages,” said Jeanne Mosure, senior vice president and group publisher, Disney Publishing Worldwide.
