Aaniih Nakoda College was renamed, in my view, after the entire tribal membership of the Aaniih and Nakoda peoples in recognition of that collective leadership. It was the first graduation under the former Fort Belknap College's new name and the school's largest group of graduates (37) ever.
Just over 60 per cent of Alaska Native people live in rural areas, often in small villages located far from urban centers. According to US Department of Justice statistics, Alaska has the highest incidence of “forcible rapes” of women of any US state. Alaska Native women experience high levels of sexual violence in both urban and rural areas. For example, between 2000 and 2003, Alaska Native people in Anchorage were 9.7 times more likely to experience sexual assault than others living in the city. A medical professional responsible for post-mortem examinations of victims of rape and murder told Amnesty International in 2005 that of the 41 confirmed cases in Alaska since 1991, 32 involved Alaska Native women.
