Createsend. Engineering our own serendipity. An article in Time magazine on engineering serendipity discusses ways to create better physical environments as well as the push for software that will improve innovation by increasing the potential for serendipitous encounters.

engineering our own serendipity

The author, Greg Lindsay, concludes that social networks are the key. “Serendipity is the process through which we discover unknown unknowns. Understanding it as an emergent property of social networks, instead of sheer luck, enables us to treat it as a viable strategy for organizing people and sharing ideas, rather than writing it off as magic. And that, in turn, has potentially huge ramifications for everything from how we work to how we learn to where we live by leading to a shift away from efficiency — doing the same thing over and over, only a little bit better — toward novelty and discovery.” – Greg Lindsay, The Aspen Institute While Silicon Valley CEO’s keep trying to engineer serendipity in their organizations, I would focus on the individual.

Maps, Apps and Storytelling. Social network analysis. Social network analysis (SNA) is a strategy for investigating social structures through the use of network and graph theories.

Social network analysis

It characterizes networked structures in terms of nodes (individual actors, people, or things within the network) and the ties or edges (relationships or interactions) that connect them. Building local communities using maps and apps. David Wilcox and Drew Mackie May 2015 | Contact Summary: thinking about communities as social ecosystems provides a framework for understanding what makes up a community, and how the use of network mapping and digital apps for organising and communicating can improve the effectiveness of community building.

Building local communities using maps and apps

Any local community embodies lots of relationships between people and organisations, who are exchanging information and ideas using a host of different methods, and engaging in a multitude of activities. If we wish to help build more or better relationships, make the most of what we have, and support more activity, it may be useful to think of the community as a social ecosystem. David Wilcox and Drew Mackie We are currently leading an exploration into Living Well in the Digital Age with the Digital Inclusion Group of Age Action Alliance, and have produced two papers as well as the content below: Making sense of technology for Care, Ageing Better and Living Well Local councils and partnerships will increasingly be faced with the challenge of deciding what technology solutions to develop and promote for care, health and wellbeing in their community.

Living Well and Ageing Better explorations

Here's some ideas on how to approach those issues, from resources on this site, and other work we've been doing since the 1990s. Although the technology has changed in thirty years, we've found the principles remain the same, in particular: put technology last, after being clear about the problem or opportunity you want to address; design with users; and recognise that "digital exclusion" is as much a problems for organisations as it is for individuals.

Unraveling the Mysteries of Your Twitter Network. J.L. Moreno: A psychologist’s ‘30s experiments invented social networking. Photo courtesy of the Moreno family Far from the Ivy-covered walls that gave rise to Facebook, the first social network analysis took place amid some far higher and more restrictive barricades—the ones that surround Sing Sing prison.

In 1931 my father, the psychiatrist and psychodrama founder J.L. Moreno, was approached by a national prison committee to help reorganize a model prison, Sing Sing. Within a few months, J.L. was assigning these hardened thugs and swindlers roles to play in theater games to assess their spontaneity, which he called group therapy. Then he and his team reassigned them to work groups with leaders based on their natural choices, a system that was later named sociometrics. Within a few months J.L. was given another assignment, to address an outbreak of girls running away from an upstate New York reform school. Fourteen girls had run away in two weeks.

Newswise — ROLLA, Mo. – Contrary to the notion that social networks are time-wasters, they could improve project management and the spread of specialized knowledge in the healthcare sector and possibly other large organizations, according to new research from Missouri University of Science and Technology.

In their analysis of how information is shared on social networks, three Missouri S&T researchers explain how the creation of a specialized network could improve the way information is shared via web-based knowledge management systems (KMS). Many large organizations use knowledge management systems to capture, retain and communicate project results and staff knowledge. Such systems can also prevent knowledge drain and provide training as “lessons learned” following specific occurrences and the resolution of particular problems the staff face, the Missouri S&T researchers say. This allowed them to understand how changes to the work environment and procedures were perceived.

Comment/Share. Social and Economic Networks: Models and Analysis. Social networks pervade our social and economic lives. They play a central role in the transmission of information about job opportunities and are critical to the trade of many goods and services. They are important in determining which products we buy, which languages we speak, how we vote, as well as whether or not we decide to become criminals, how much education we obtain, and our likelihood of succeeding professionally. The countless ways in which network structures affect our well-being make it critical to understand how social network structures impact behavior, which network structures are likely to emerge in a society, and why we organize ourselves as we do.

Listen to some commentators, and it sounds as if the honest worker in the corporation is being oppressed by power-crazed managers, hoarding information like Gollum with a hangover. Presumably some of these managers were promoted from honest worker level, so does hierarchy bestow power, which immediately corrupts? Not so fast. There are definitely bad hierarchies, but like all organizational forms, they can be done well or done poorly. Hierarchy still has a role, especially in larger, more established businesses, and some scenarios exist where a networked approach would be detrimental.

Collaboration: The Network Effect - The Daily Mint. Everyone is talking about the enormous benefits to be had through collaborative working and better employee engagement. Industry analysts (McKinsey) report a 25% improvement in organizational efficiency when companies successfully deploy a collaboration platform. Whether it’s social media or social collaboration, organizations are striving to deliver better value through a more connected workforce and closer engagement with customers and stakeholders. The term ‘social business’ is often used to describe this important development. The paradox is that organizations continue to allocate a significant proportion of their IT budgets on communications infrastructure and ‘social software’ and virtually nothing on systems and tools that can analyse how effective this investment is. While companies know that social networks are important, most managers don’t understand how these networks really work.

Sometimes these initiatives have the desired effect, but the results are not always positive. Using enterprise social network analysis to discover the informal power players in the company.
