Ear Clearing Techniques for Divers. Illustration of the Ear Ear woes are the No. 1 reason divers pull the plug on a dive, and in extreme cases, the sport itself. But with a few tricks and advanced techniques, almost anyone can make equalizing easier. In diving, the Valsalva maneuver is often used on descent to equalise the pressure in the middle ear to the ambient pressure. Performed properly — pinching your nose shut while exhaling — most divers can descend without any problems. You should never continue with a descent if you are experiencing ear pain. Listen for the "pop. " Start early. Equalize at the surface. Descend feet first. Look up.

Use a descent line. Stay ahead. Stop if it hurts. Avoid milk. Avoid tobacco and alcohol. Keep your mask clear. Alternative Clearing Techniques There are problems with the traditional Valsalva maneuver: It may not work if the tubes are already locked by a pressure differential, and it's all too easy to blow hard enough to damage something. Toynbee Maneuver. Lowry Technique.

Alexander Mustard. This article was first published on Wetpixel in November 2010. Down the years, I have tried to review the important digital Nikon SLRs Ð the ones that have introduced new technology with the promise of taking our images further. Typically these tend to be flagship models, which showcase the new features before they filter down through the Nikon range. Small in size, but packed with many pro-level features, such as 100% viewfinder, 14-bit A/D converter and 1/320th flash synch. The D7000 breaks this pattern. This time Nikon is introducing a lot of new tech lower in the range. Equally surprising (and impressive) is that Nauticam already have a fully functioning NA-D7000 housing ready so soon after the release of the camera.

Shown at DEMA 2010 and ready to dive, the compact, but fully featured Nauticam NA-D7000 at Stoney Cove, November 2010. This review evaluates the camera and housing in both cold water and the tropics. The D7000 is a fast, responsive camera, with a robust sounding shutter. Alexander Mustard. Stephen Colquitt - Photographer. Welcome back Steve Hi all / I have been away travelling in Central and South America for the past two months.

Visited some amazing places and hopefully got some good shots too. / Just got home yesterday and after having a bit of a power nap I’m looking forward to sharing some images with you all over the next couple of weeks. / Cheers / Steve My most popular photos (more than a 1000 views) Hi Guys / I havent posted a journal entry in quite a while, but I spent this afternoon thinking about my work here on RedBubble and did a little bit of work to analyse which works are my most popular (in terms of views). / So here they are in one convenient place. All the image below have more than a thousand views. Im quite proud of that achievement. / It was a fairly interesting exercise for me… My first challenge win (some love for "ride on") Happy to announce that one of my images was selected as a winner for a Red Bubble Challenge.

New Group - Images from Bali and Lombok. Dive Savaii - Sites. Le Lagoto Resort. You'll find us on the coast near Fagamalo village, on the northern tip of Savaii. After Upolu, Savaii is Samoa's second main island, and the third largest island in Polynesia after Tahiti and New Zealand. There's plenty of opportunity to enjoy nature's beauty in our 'neighbourhood' – from the crystal clear ocean teeming with tropical fish and majestic turtles, to the lava fields, rainforests, waterfalls, mineral springs and caves.

And to catch a glimpse of the traditional Savaiian way of life, just head to our local village, Fagamalo. Getting to Le Lagoto is easy with a one hour ferry ride to Savai'i and a 45 minute scenic coastal drive in our own 16 seat air-conditioned van from Salelologa wharf. Untitled - Samoa.pdf. Humpback Whale Watching Expeditions in Tonga. Every year since 1996 NAI'A has voyaged to Tonga to conduct expeditions among the humpback whales who have traveled north from the Antarctic to mate and give birth in Tonga's (relatively) warm tropical waters. NAI'A's 10-day trips begin in Tonga's capital "city" of Nuku'alofa and extend north into the untrammeled coral atoll wilderness of the Ha'apai Group, where the greatest number of humpback whale pods are found -- but almost no other boats, save the fishing canoes of villagers.

Sailing throughout this maze of islands and reefs, the location and activity of the whales largely determines the precise course of each new day. These are wild animals and this is no zoo! However, our experience has proven the mornings to be the best time for whale spotting and swimming encounters. Later in the afternoon NAI'A finds a safe evening anchorage near a dive site. We always plan to do at least one and sometimes more dives each day. Welcome to Deco Stop Lodge. Palau's remarkable marine lakes are portraits of evolution in action 08-01-2006 // Pamela S. Turner FLOATING in a silent world the color of milky green tea, I am enveloped by an undulating horde of 10 million jellyfish, some the size of cantaloupes, others the size of apples and a few no bigger than blueberries.

All dance the two-step jelly ballet: pulse in, pulse out; pulse in, pulse out. These jellies are found only in this 12-acre pocket of seawater. Palau's sheltered marine lakes are tiny seas imprisoned in terra firma. Rise of the Jellies Laura Martin and Lori Bell of the Coral Reef Research Foundation (CRRF), founded in 1991 by marine biologists to study and improve the protection of coral reefs, live the fantasy of every kid who ever dreamed of becoming a marine biologist. "Lots of people have heard about the lake jellies, but there are so many misconceptions," Martin says. Like many jelly species, the spotted jellyfish has a multi-stage life cycle.

Who or what was to blame? The Bride's Diary - Honeymoons & Holidays: Palau... An Untouched Paradise. A virtually untouched series of limestone islands is now easy for Australians to reach, writes David Barbeler for The Age Traveller. As a Westerner who's visited numerous stunning countries corrupted by tourism, I initially had trouble understanding why the people of Palau were getting so excited. Located 800km east of the Philippines, the Republic of Palau is a series of more than 250 limestone islands virtually untouched by tourists.

Many compare it to the feel of Bali 30 years ago. Up until April, it use to take Australians about 24 hours to travel there through a limited number of interconnecting flights and/or boats. However a new A310 Airbus service, operated by Pacific Flier, has just opened the door to Australian tourists for the first time, with a direct flight from Brisbane cutting the trip down to a mere five and a half hours and costing $799 return. What makes Palau so special is that it is virtually surrounded by reefs, many of which are world renowned in underwater recreation. Palau | Scuba Warehouse. Welcome To Dive Damai. When it arrived the first test was to see what worked in my D80 Ikelite housing. Nothing was the answer, couldn't even close the housing with the D7000 inside. The camera body is just too thick, front to back, to fit at all.

I was always going to buy a new housing but in the pursuit of knowledge I had to try. I have since ordered an Ikelite housing from Digital Diver for $1672 delivered. It arrives in a few days. Why Ikelite? Well, I have all the ports, like the see-through acrylic and extra space for tweaking and I can afford them. One drawback with an Ike housing is that you can't pop the camera flash up and use fibre optic flash sync, but there are stirrings in my little grey cells that may overcome this. Initial impressions of the camera. The larger 3" screen is wonderful. AF during video will be an issue. I'll be leaving the "sticky buttons" or "Release button to use dial" option (f7 in the control menu) permanently on. f6 in the control menu is another must for me.
