For the third year in a row, I was responsible for a good deal of the graphics in the annual Global Risk Report published by the World Economic Forum . For the report, hundreds of experts take part in a survey on their perception of what they consider the most important global risk and their inter–dependency. Any system that uses some sort of inference to generate user value is at the mercy of the quality of the input data and the accuracy of the inference mechanism. As neither of these can be guaranteed to by perfect, users of the system will inevitably come across incorrect results. In web search we see this all the time with irrelevant pages being surfaced. In the context of track // microsoft , I see this in the form of either articles that are incorrectly added to the wrong cluster, or articles that are incorrectly assigned to no cluster, becoming orphans. It is important, therefore, to take these imperfections into account when building the interface.

For the MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference a few weeks ago, Stanford biomechanical engineering student Muthu Alagappan presented his work on redefining basketball positions. After studying players like LeBron James and Blake Griffin, many analysts are now suggesting that there are new positions, which are simply hybrids of the one's we already had. For example, some players are now labeled "point-forwards" or "combo-guards." But what if we were wrong about our initial five positions. Maybe a "Center" is just a label for people over a certain height, and there are actually three different types of big men in the NBA. Just pushed out an update to the Adobe Illustrator MultiExporter script that lets you specify if you want to export PNGs and JPGs at a different scale factor so that you can generate versions of the images at double resolution for iPhone retina displays. The option is set in the “Scaling” field in MultiExporter dialog box: Leave it at “100%” for normal exports, set it to “200%” for double-resolution exports. You’ll probably also want to set a prefix or suffix or the file name, too, so that you can keep the files separated from the normal resolution ones. I don’t think the update should have broken anything else, but let me know if you run into problems. (And to read more about how the script works, here’s more information about it.)
