Bears and Other Nice Things - UPDATE May 7, 2016

At the Bear Center, Holly and Lucky might be starting to have warm feelings, although it seems a little early. Ted sittingThe word is out that we can now see Ted at nighttime using the link for Honey's cam. A Lily Fan said, “So nice to be able to see Ted at night! Bear News from Sharon Herrell - UPDATE September 22, 2019

Most bears get used to the rains, Luckywind and snow it becomes part of their environment but still makes them nervous. I'm not sure why Lucky bear has never gotten used to it. He is very afraid of loud noises engines and thunder booming overhead, he always finds shelter and comfort in his bunker. Holly We added more straw to the large bunker this week. LuckyMeanwhile as Lucky watched from a distance his curiosity heightened and he moved to the bunker roof. TashaTasha has slowed down and actually passed Holly in height and weight this year. The color around the enclosure is bursting with radiant beauty, the wild flowers have taken over the barren ground and thebears are slowing down. Oliana, Cubs, and Gray Faces - UPDATE August 27, 2019

Born in 2011, she disappeared long enough as a yearling for me to mistakenly radio-collar a look-alike and then realize my mistake when she reappeared. Cub in white pine Then she disappeared or was not recognized until 2016 and 2018 when she showed up without cubs at the ages of 5 and 7 years old—sweet as ever. Now this year she reappeared and joined the 4-cub club that has reached its highest prevalence this year with Donna, Ursula, Lily, Samantha, and now Oliana as 2019 members.

Her 4 male cubs, have no easily distinguishable markings and will probably provide further mystery. The five litters of four this year are more than we’ve seen in the clan (four) in this entire study. With so many cubs this year, we commonly see them resting in trees as their mothers forage, and sometimes see families intermingling.

Yesterday, 32-year-old Shadow looked round enough to den soon. The older males are getting more gray hairs. Oliana, White Pines, Red Pines - UPDATE August 28, 2019. Here is a nice picture of Oliana and her four male cubs that shows sweet Oliana and 4 male cubsOliana peacefully chewing.

Oliana, White Pines, Red Pines - UPDATE August 28, 2019

Even though she has been absent so many of her 8 years, when she shows up, she is the same calm, sweet bear as ever. Today, Ursula was resting in a big white pine, nursing a cub on a big branch near the top of the tree. At the same time Wild Mom, now named Emelia (not a member of Shadow’s clan), and her 3 cubs were up a red pine. The pictures show the big difference between white pines and red pines as refuge trees. The Debate Around Lynn Rodgers and Feeding Bears August 6, 2013 As some of you know, I visited Ely Minnesota to do a presentation as a fundraiser for the North American Bear Centre that was established there by Dr.

The Debate Around Lynn Rodgers and Feeding Bears

Lynn Rodgers. I stayed at the Wildlife Research Institute (another Lynn Roger's establishment), that is out in the forest and is from where their research is conducted. It was a treat to finally meet Lynn's wife Donna who has worked very hard with him towards their goals over so many years. As it turned out that week was a very critical time for Lynn and Donna because much of Lynn's life's research work seemed to be suddenly ending. There is so much misunderstanding around the research Lynn Rogers and his co researcher, Sue Mansfield are doing, that this news was devastating for me and as well as for thousands of people who have been following Lynn and the bear's lives that so many people have come to know intimately over the years. It’s been a wonderful roller coaster ever since the first field course, through the LilyPad Picnic, and now two more courses and lots of bears—each one so different, and watched people intrigue as they learn and the bears steal their hearts.

Much Has Happened - UPDATE August 1, 2019

Herbie and Wolf Several bears are emerging as favorites. Shadow, the graying 32-year-old matriarch, showed us she still has her canine teeth in this picture. What intrigues participants about her is her wariness that has helped her survive to become the second oldest black bear on record despite heavy hunting pressure in this area. This fed bear is not a dead bear. Ursula's cubAnother is ultra-trusting One-eyed Jack, in his twenties when the average age of males in the hunting kill is 2 (age 3 for females). Another is sweet Lucy who easily steals hearts.

Celebrating the Pond - UPDATE June 22, 2019

As the Bear Center celebrated the first day of summer by opening the pond, the bears held a bigger celebration showing their joy of being out and taking their first dip in the pond. All who watched were commenting about the obvious fun the bears were having. All the while, Bear Educator Carolyn Quick was snapping these pictures of the double fun Lucky and Holly were having together. The photos speak for themselves. Great to see. As an aside, Carolyn made her debut into the world of bears by walking with research bears back in 1989, breaking her ankle by stepping in a hole, and despite that she has been a devoted bear lover ever since. Lucky, Cubs, Construction, and More - UPDATE June 19, 2019

Gabrielle and HeinrikBig time. I think they will start filling the pond that is a couple feet deeper in a couple days. They are also upgrading the nature trail and the wooden gates to the right of the building and making room for a new outdoor exhibit. Good minds and skills coming together for a better looking Bear Center. I’m looking forward to seeing the new look. Lily or Ellie? - UPDATE June 6, 2019. Four Cubs - whose are they?

Lily or Ellie? - UPDATE June 6, 2019

Caught on a trail cam video, it is either Lily or Ellie with 4 cute cubs. Were waiting for an up close sighting to see the white spot on Lily’s chest to be sure. It is mind-bending to think of Lily who began with one dear cub Hope in 2010; Faith and Jason in 2011; Light-faced motherEli and Ellie in 2013; Frannie, Frankie, and Francis in 2015; Kim, Garber, and Dave in 2017, and now possibly 4 in 2019. (1, 2, 2, 3, 3, 4). I would love to have a collar on her. Date Night and the Joy of Loons and Bears - UPDATE June 3, 2019. The excitement continues. Saturday’s Date Night was going to be sitting quietly on the pontoon boat near the beaver lodge in our bay where our Samantha's cubneighbor recently saw five beavers at once, plus two otters and two muskrats on different days.

While we waited, two loons swam by without diving for food and went near the shore. Some years back a pair of loons nested on that shore, Cubs Everywhere and Making More - UPDATE May 30, 2019. Little Valentine, born to RC in 2016, grew up to be a 3-year-old mother of two brown cubs—one light, one dark. The light one sticks close by her. Valentine's light brown cubThe dark one mostly stays up trees. We’re guessing that it was Crackle, the only brown male in the area, who we have to thank for this. The big excitement yesterday was seeing this family.

We didn’t know at first if it was really Valentine. Bear News from Sharon Herrell - UPDATE May 20, 2019. Dr. Rogers is catching up with his wife Donna upon her return from Europe tonight so he will not be writing an update. Lucky However, a couple days ago Sharon Herrell wrote an update on our bears at the North American Bear Center. Even though it is a couple days after, we thought it was well worth sharing. As well, we took some video of her and Jim Stroner attempting to get some nice photographs of Tasha for our yearly calendar. From Sharon: TedThe weather in Ely is finally cooperating and work on the pond renovation should begin very soon. We have a strong suspicion (and some indication from Tasha) that Holly is in estrus. Shadow! Fern and Cub, Jewel, and RC - UPDATE May 18, 2019. Two nights ago I got a call from a neighbor who was 99% sure he saw Shadow.

Fern and cubEveryone is keeping an eye out for her to see if she made it through another winter to turn 32 years old. But it was too dark to show her gray face and be sure. Last evening, he called again, this time 99.9% sure. I rushed over with the long lens. The low light camera lightened the scene and showed her lying warily in the woods with her ears perked, listening for danger in different directions. Another call came earlier last evening saying to rush over—Fern is here with a cub! Herbie, RC and Yearlings - UPDATE May 8, 2019. Charlie Russell, Herbie, Etc. - UPDATE May 7, 2019. I can’t help thinking about Charlie Russell who passed away a year ago today. He did a lot for me and made bears his life. He understood them and cared about them.
