Therefore learning theories are mostly descriptive. As an example, situated learning claims that learning is strongly tied to the context and the activity in which it occurs. Learning theories also can be prescriptive (tell how people should learn), but prescription is rather the role of pedagogical theory.

In any case, learning theories play explicitly or implicitly a major role in instructional design models and the educational technology field. 2 Major schools of thought In the literature related to education (in particular in educational technology, it is not always easy to separate learning theory from educational theory. 3 History 5 Links Overview maps. Taxonomy of Learning Theories

Some of them are old, some of them are new. Some are flash-in-the-pan, others stand the test of time and remain applicable to this very day. Some of them are controversial, while others have assumed the aura of conventional wisdom. Some of them are simple, while others are incomprehensible to mere mortals. It can be quite a challenge for the modern learning professional to identify an appropriate learning theory, draw practical ideas from it, and apply it to their daily work. Where do you start? Which theory do you choose? What is its central premise? How does it relate to other theories? Taxonomy To clear some of the obfuscation that surrounds learning theory, I have developed the following Taxonomy of Learning Theories.

This taxonomy identifies key theories that apply to workplace learning, categorises them according to common properties, and illustrates the relationships among them. Firstly, the question of how to label Connectivism is an important one because this affects how people connect with the theory.

Why #Connectivism is not a Learning Theory « A Point of Contact

As a relatively young theory, its growth, acceptance, employment and how people actually understand Connectivism all depend partially on how it is represented. Representing a theory inaccurately limits the quality of the potential connections made with that theory, an insurmountable obstacle for such a theory that is concerned with the creation of successful networks and connections of specific quality to support this success.

Secondly, to be clear, my position isn’t one of anti-Connectivism. To say that Connectivism is not a learning theory is not to devalue the theory. I seek to clarify what Connectivism is and to hopefully bring up some questions, presenting it as a fundamental theory of Education, not Learning. Education is Intention There are any number of network types in the world: Restaurant Franchises, Delivery Networks, even Networks of Excellence. Do Learning Styles Really Exist?

Let me answer that by saying, most definitely ‘yes’. In saying that, though, I do realise that I appear to be swimming against the tide of opinion. Over the last few years, it seems, more academics have been coming out to try to dismiss the notion of ‘learning styles’. However, when I read or listen to their arguments, it more often appears that their arguments are not against ‘learning styles’ but against one particular theory of learning styles and how it can be used, or misused, in education. In some way, I guess the study of learning styles is a bit like the study of the universe.
