Living in a non-English-speaking country, I've seen friends and family members explicitly look for and use local and localized websites—properly localized sites definitely have an advantage with users. Google works hard to show users the best possible search results. Many times those are going to be pages that are localized, for the user's location and/or in the user's language. If you're planning to take the time to create and maintain a localized version of your website, making it easy to recognize and find is a logical part of that process. Preparing for global websites Expanding a website to cover multiple regions and/or languages can be challenging. Planning multi-regional websites All websites start with domain names; when it comes to domain names, Google differentiates between two types of domain names: URL structures.

Each language is assigned a 2-letter (639-1) and 3-letter (639-2 and 639-3), lowercase abbreviation, amended in later versions of the nomenclature. The system is highly useful for linguists and ethnographers to categorize the languages spoken on a regional basis, and to compute analysis in the field of lexicostatistics. ISO 639 has five code lists. The keynote speaker will be Alolita Sharma, Director of Language Engineering from the Wikimedia Foundation. She is followed by a strong line up in sessions entitled Developers, Creators, Localizers, Machines, and Users, including speakers from Microsoft, Wikimedia Foundation, the UN FAO, W3C, Yandex, SDL, Lionbridge, Asia Pacific TLD, Verisign, DFKI, and many more. On the afternoon of the second day we will hold Open Space breakout discussions. Abstracts and details about an additional poster session will be provided shortly. The program will also feature an LD4LT event on May 8-9, focusing on text analytics and the usefulness of Wikipedia and Dbpedia for multiilngual text and content analytics, and on language resources and aspects of converting selected types of language resources into RDF. Designing for an international audience. Well, it's a heck of a process, let me tell you.

Designing for an international audience

One of my clients is taking an English language site and creating 14 different translations (for starters). No single person is going to have this fluency -- the translations range from Bengali and Chinese, through Hebrew and Polish, to the key Western European langauges. And so we've put together a translation team - two people per langauge. One person is the translation professional, and the other is the proofreader. And when the first 14 languages are done, many more are projected. So we first created the English language website. The pdf's go back to the proofreaders, especially for line break issues and such, although they also have an eye out for wrong shifts in meaning. Now we go through the website and create a list of words that we need translated just for the HTML version - file names, graphic text, text links, etc. Next we take the English HTML and change the pages' charset meta tags and lang attributes.
