Why? The answer is simple. Because I could use them as I wish, for whatever I wish, without long-term commitments and with the extra bonus of a community of professionals that use, extend and support them. In this post I am not going to talk about open source learning management systems such as eFront[1] but rather dedicated open source “authoring tools”. The list that it follows is not in particular order. => If you know a free or open source authoring tool that is not included in the list I will highly appreciate if you write a comment with a link!

Checking Under the Hood: Choosing a Learning Management System

Options aside, for most educational institutions, a learning management system (LMS) is online learning. And because it is often the most expensive component of the online learning ecosystem, because there are dozens of LMSs, and because once you’ve chosen and built on your online program around a certain LMS, breaking up is hard to do (apologies to Neil Sedaka), this post advocates the importance of asking good questions when shopping for an LMS. [Note: I've gathered these questions from various sources and my own experiences over the years--too many to remember-- so a general thanks to the many skilled e-learning professionals with whom I've interacted, worked and whose resources I've accessed.] 1.

I meet them in person maybe once a year, sometimes never. When I assign activities, it’s online. Without an LMS, these assignments get messy. Organizationally challenged I was not the most organized of students in high school. LMS’s serve many fine purposes in life, including assisting both teacher and student to remain on top of things. Which LMS do you use and why

Personally, when I did a research and tested most of common and well-known LMS, both commercial and open-source, I literally fell in love with Absorb LMS by Blatant, UK... it is flash based, but really powerful. quite expensive, though... Sharepoint LMS (NOT the free Sharepoint elearning kit) was ok, too. Joomla LMS, Atutor, Claroline, let me down. Docebo, Dokeos, Moodle, were my final choice... Anyway, this community has talked a lot about LMS... just use the search box... threads like this: or this: may truly help. cheers. An “active user” or “unique login” is any trainer or trainee who signs in during the billing period. Once a user has become “active” for the 30 day period, there is no limit to the number of times they can login. Many customers find that they only need 50% of their total trainee population under a plan. For example, if you have 1000 trainees in or outside your organization, then a 500 user plan should cover you depending on the frequency of training.
