My job has many different components - which I thoroughly enjoy - and the top two pieces to my job is when I get to work directly with teachers and when I get to work directly with students. I have been fortunate enough to be working with one group students regularly for 2 years now. Most of the time, I've got a targeted lesson to tie into something they are working on in class or something their teacher has asked we work on ... but I surprised them Friday with a Valentine's Day themed selection of activities. These students know Google Slides. They have been working with Slides since 2nd grade, so that's nothing new. However, I published this slidedeck to the web, so they got to see it in a different light. (At first they didn't even recognize it as Slides.)

I used the Jourdain presentation template from Slides Carnival and they "oohed & aahed" over it. Since it's "choice activities", I explained they had 6 different activities to choose from and they were free to switch at any time. Ancient Egyptians wrote passionate love poetry in hieroglyphics thousands of years ago, but it's only in the last couple of hundred years that we've started referring to love as 'romantic'. We started calling it romantic because it’s dazzlingly magnificent like the Roman Empire. Robert Solomon and Kathleen Higgins have put together a selection of excerpts from Plato’s Symposium to late twentieth century philosophies in the Philosophy of (Erotic) Love.

Irving Singer wrote extensively on the history of love in his trilogy called The Nature of Love, which also starts with Plato, plots the rise of romantic love, and then explores ideas of love in the modern world. More recently, philosopher Carrie Ichikawa Jenkins at the University of British Columbia has been investigating the metaphysics of love, including questions such as “what is love?” The Odds of Finding Life and Love | It's Okay to be Smart | PBS Digital Studios.

It’s Valentine’s Day tomorrow, and although I don’t normally do anything for it, I thought that this year I would take the opportunity to share one of my favourite poems with my students.

Here’s the plan in case you want to do it too. Ask your students what day it is, and whether anything special happens on this day in their country. What do they know about Valentine’s Day in the UK? What kind of gifts do people normally give for Valentine’s Day? Give each group the word cloud. Show them an onion. Ask the students to close their eyes and put their heads on the desk (but try not to fall asleep!). Ask them to discuss how similar the poem was to their ideas. You can then do some pronunciation/speaking work. They talk about why you pause in those places – it’s because of line/stanza breaks, and also phrases within the lines. They can chose whether to read Valentine, or an anti-Valentine poem. In groups with other students who have chosen the same poem, they practise reading it. Like this:
