Skirt + Rock House by MCK Architects. Australian firm MCK Architects were commissioned to do an addition and remodel on a modest-sized bungalow on a hill in Vaucluse, a suburb of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. The Skirt + Rock House came to be because the homeowners were in need of additional space and wanted more of a connection to the outdoors.

The site came with a huge rock nestled in the hill in the back that eventually became a natural focal point for the house. The back of the house (which houses the extension) features a double-height living room that has windowpanes at the top and sliding door panels at the bottom that really open the space up. The sliding doors completely open one of the back corners up to the backyard – only two, small visible supports remain in view. I love how the rock looks like it’s a part of the living room. This back corner of the house also opens up but this time for a lounge area. Even with the addition, the home still fits in with the neighborhood. Photos by Richard Glover. Working together in one of their first collaborations the 10 and Buro Happold team set out to create a simple and elegant structural solution for a bridge that would be a visual focal point both within the Shizimen District itself and along the Pearl River Delta coastline. The winning bridge scheme proposes an undulating ribbon of structure that wraps around the 6 lane road deck in a continuous sculptural loop form. Diagram Section Deck Section Structural Diagram Plan. The “House like village” project in Amsterdam. “House like village” is a very interesting and unique space located in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. It’s actually a loft with a very original internal structure.

The whole space was designed by Marc Koehler Architects and the project was completed in 2011.The 160 square meter loft has been structured like a series of small houses inside a larger house. The concept is interesting and unusual. The name of the project is very suggestive for the way the loft is divided. It’s like a miniature village in there. Instead of designing a large flexible space, the architects created a series of distinctive areas that serve their own purpose. Gardens By The Bay by Grant Associates and Wilkinson Eyre Architects. Grant Associates, a landscape architecture consultancy, in collaboration with Wilkinson Eyre Architects, have completed the Gardens by the Bay in Singapore.

Bay South is the largest garden at Gardens by the Bay and it stands at 54 hectares located next to the Marina Bay Sands. Masterplanned by UK-based landscape architecture firm Grant Associates, this lively and vibrant garden showcases the best of tropical horticulture and garden artistry with a mass display of tropical flowers and coloured foliage and more. Key highlights are: Supertrees Designed by Grant Associates as tree-like structures between 25 metres and 50 metres in height (9 to 16 storeys), the 18 Supertrees are uniquely designed vertical gardens, with emphasis placed on creating a “wow” factor through the vertical display of tropical flowering climbers, epiphytes and ferns.

The Supertrees are embedded with sustainable energy and water technologies integral to the cooling of the Conservatory. Cooled Conservatories. RainShine is the first modernist LEED Platinum house in the Southeast, according to architect Robert M. Cain. Retired couple Chuck and Mary Bosserman purchased a lot near downtown Decatur, a suburb of Atlanta, Georgia, with the goal of building an energy-efficient home filled with natural light, cooled by cross-breezes, and supportive of their active lifestyle. However, they accomplished much more than that. Their vision, executed with the expertise of architect Robert M.

Cain, AIA, LEED AP, resulted in a home that exceeds LEED Platinum standards – the greenest level of certification in the organization’s pilot program for homes. Dubbed “RainShine,” the home uses nearly half the energy of its traditional counterparts, and its modern aesthetic has attracted the attention of the community, creating opportunities for education. A butterfly roof is the stand-out feature of the home’s design. Modest by most standards, the two-story, 2,800-square-foot home maximizes its confined site. Mountain Lodge on Sognefjorden by Haptic. Slideshow: a swimming pool, spa, cinema and games room will be hidden in the rock beneath the main cluster of buildings at this Norwegian hunting lodge and hotel by London architects Haptic. A lounge, kitchen and library will be accommodated in five buildings surrounding an open courtyard, oriented so they each look out onto a different view of the surrounding forest or Norway's largest fjord. A lower-level cut into the mountain will house the additional facilities for guests, including spa and treatment rooms, a gymnasium and a pool with a wall that partially exposes the surrounding rock.

Natural materials including timber cladding and raw stone will help root the buildings in their surroundings, while cutaway corners and openings offer different vistas. Paths will lead from the lodge to eight private cabins nestled among the trees on the hillside that descends towards the fjord. Click above for larger image Images are by MIR. Here's some more information from Haptic: Leaf House by Mareines & Patalano Architects. Admittedly this is a rather more elaborate than the architecture we traditionally feature here, in the search for a group of firms I’ve not come across before I found myself admiring this “Leaf House” which has been built by Brazilian architects Mareines & Patalano. I felt this was worth making an exception to the rule however, as the project made me begin to consider the challenges faced by the designers in hotter climates so hopefully it will do the same for you too.

This open plan design obviously helps to keep the temperature of the home down during the summer months, which is something rather alien to us here in Europe where the aim is to keep all hot air trapped inside our homes. I enjoyed the fact that the house has been centred around a collective dining and living space that speaks of quite a communal home, you can imagine the family gathering here for shade when the heat becomes too overwhelming. www.mareines-patalano.com.br. House in Megurohoncho by Torafu Architects. Tokyo-based studio Torafu Architects has renovated this mixed office and residential building located in Meguro, one of the 23 special wards of Tokyo, Japan. House in Megurohoncho by Torafu Architects: “This is a renovation project of a 40 year-old reinforced concrete building that originally housed storage and office spaces from the basement to the 2nd floor and residential spaces on the 3rd floor. Our current design focused on the building’s exterior and living quarters on the 2nd and 3rd floors. The second phase of the project is set to convert the basement and 1st floor into commercial spaces.

First, all interior partitioning was done away with to free up space. An aperture was made at the center of the 3rd floor and a large piece of furniture with built-in stairs was placed directly underneath it to create a line of flow inside the building. Atop of this piece of furniture connecting the upper and lower floors there is a wide landing that makes another small floor.

By Karissa Rosenfield (click here for original article) You may remember Sou Fujimoto Architects radical House NA from this video we shared with you last November. Designed for a young couple in a quiet Tokyo neighborhood, the 914 square-foot transparent house contrasts the typical concrete block walls seen in most of Japan’s dense residential areas. Associated with the concept of living within a tree, the spacious interior is comprised of 21 individual floor plates, all situated at various heights, that satisfy the clients desire to live as nomads within their own home. Described as “a unity of separation and coherence”, the house acts as both a single room and a collection of rooms. The loosely defined program and the individual floor plates create a setting for a range of activities that can take place at different scales. Sou Fujimoto states, “The intriguing point of a tree is that these places are not hermetically isolated but are connected to one another in its unique relativity.

Cutty Sark by Grimshaw. London architects Grimshaw have completed the restoration of historic tea clipper the Cutty Sark, which reopened to the public today in Greenwich. The architects have completely repaired the vessel's deck and rigging, which were severely damaged in a fire in 2006, and have raised the entire ship three metres above its dry dock to create an underground exhibition hall below. A glazed structure surrounding the ship forms a roof canopy over this hall, bridging the space between the ground and the hull. This structure also integrates an entrance, where a bridge leads across into the ship and stairs climb down into the space beneath.
