Live report concert Netherlands

SAVAGES: Riot Grrrls. October 3rd, 2012 So Savages blew apart the stage on Jools Holland last night in what must rank as the most ferociously meteoric rise for a British guitar band in, well, ever.

SAVAGES: Riot Grrrls

Read our interview with them from our September/October issue. Savages – [lead singer] Jehn’s gain-friendly post punk band with musicians Ayse Hassan, Gemma Thompson and Fay Milton – have whipped up a storm of buzz in recent months, grounded almost utterly on word-of-mouth, some guarded press coverage and a clutch of otherworldly, sublime live performances that seem to have intoxicated audiences. Singles “Husbands” and “Flying to Berlin” are pointed, confrontational brooders – simmering at the seems with sexy, heavy-browed angst. The project started back in January 2011, when Jehn sent an email to founding member Thompson – who had played live with John and Jehn for the Time for the Devil tour – asking whether she could join the band. SAVAGES @ The Shacklewell Arms, London 29 May “In some inland post feel the savagery, the utter savagery, closed round you – all that mysterious life of the wilderness that stirs in the hearts of the wild.

There’s no initiation either into such mysteries. We have to live in the midst of the incomprehensible, which is detestable. And it has a fascination, too, which goes to work upon us; the fascination of the abomination. Imagine the growing regrets, the longing to escape, the powerless disgust, the surrender.” Buzz bands are in a tricky position. Savages are an ambitious new London-based rock band led by Jehnny Beth (vocals) and Gemma Thompson (guitar), with bassist Ayse Hassan and Faye Milton on drums. The rear room of the Shacklewell Arms is a sepulchral cavern ringed by mirrors and arched alcoves. Tonight’s soundcheck is a taut bass and drum tattoo to a demented click-track. ‘Husbands’ follows, all paranoid disco, and already it stirs a ring of recognition in the audience. Interview: Savages. They're certainly wild at heart, but you'll need to see them to hear them Words Luke Turner Photography Joseph Tovey Frost First gigs are all too often like first kisses — clumsy words and awkward noises, slobbery, overly enthusiastic and ultimately forgettable. Not so for Savages, whose live debut in January was an unqualified success. Called up as last-minute support by British Sea Power the morning of a show in Brighton, the London-based four-piece were thrown in at the deep end, their intense mixture of howling gothic psychedelia and swing-heavy, dub-tinted rhythm section destroying all-comers. “We thought a lot about what the first Savages gig might be like, but it couldn’t have been better than what happened,” says singer Jehnny Beth.

“We didn’t think we’d have an all girl band initially. That fourth member is drummer Fay Milton, whose background is in dance music, especially UK Garage, “which is really different from these guys,” she says with a laugh. Rising: Savages. There's nothing unassuming or reticent about the black mantelpiece stacked with vases of red roses and a replica of the clock from Dali's The Persistence of Memory; anthologies of 1970s porn magazines on the bookshelves, the enormous vintage wooden speakers in front of the tiled fireplace, and Thelonious Monk LPs propped by the record player.

On a tour of the handsome house, Jehnny (real name Camille Berthomier) points out the French doors in her bedroom where she often wakes to see foxes peering in, before leading the way down to the tiny basement where Savages have been recording their debut single, "Flying to Berlin" b/w "Husbands", the second half of which you can hear above. Savages is a rock band from London and lead singer Jehnny Beth (real name: Camille Berthomier) is from France.[1] The band's guitarist Gemma Thompson had come up with the name for the band and had been discussing the idea with singer Jehnny Beth for almost a year.[2] Thompson says the band's name was derived from books, such as Lord of the Flies, that she read when she was younger.[2] The band was eventually formed in October 2011[3] and they had their first gig in January 2012[4] supporting rock band British Sea Power.[3] Their manager John Best also manages Sigur Ros.[5] The Observer has said of Savages: "it's not exactly sexy, it's not funny and they're not going to be rolling around in mud like the Slits.

On 9 December 2012, the BBC announced that the band had been nominated for the Sound of 2013 poll.[11] I Am Here (2012) Radar Band Of The Week No:91 - Savages - New Music Radar. “It seems like such a cliché.” “People put you in that embarrassment, though,” argues singer Jehnny Beth, “like ‘band equals entertainment’... but that’s not how I see it. Of course there’s a part that’s entertainment, but it’s good if we can change things just a little in people’s heads...” Radio 1's Hackney Weekend 2012 - Acts - Savages. Savages : website.
