10 Essential Free E-Books for Web Designers

While many may still prefer print for long-form reading, e-books are gaining popularity as a worthy digital alternative. Aside from all the usual benefits of digitizing a book (faster searches, less page-flipping, linked pages, additional resources, etc.), e-books are a huge help to digital and online professionals. There are now e-books available on almost every aspect of design, from planning your business and managing your time, to designing web applications. http://mashable.com/2010/08/18/free-ebooks-web-designers/

Useless Fliers

http://uselessfliers.tumblr.com/ Not mine: Make A Difference This blog post was forwarded to me recently; based on the timing, it’s possible this was prompted by the flurry of memetic attention that Useless Fliers was getting a few weeks back, though I don’t know for sure. It could as easily be coincidence, or something older recently noticed. In any case, its interesting to see the subversion of traditional flier utility kept in check while the uselessness of my own designs is abandoned in favor of some sort of effort to encourage good in the world. (Or at least to encourage difference-making, I suppose; will this be the pulltab that inspires the next supervillain?

The Just-World Fallacy

The Misconception: People who are losing at the game of life must have done something to deserve it. The Truth: The beneficiaries of good fortune often do nothing to earn it, and bad people often get away with their actions without consequences. A woman goes out to a club wearing stilettos and a miniskirt with no underwear. She gets pretty drunk and stumbles home in the wrong direction. She ends up lost in a bad neighborhood. She gets raped.
http://agoraartgalleryblog.com/the-prodigy-of-color-aelita-andre-a-solo-exhibition/ This June a truly unusual exhibition is coming to Gallery II. The artworks in the show are full of artistic energy, lively immediacy and a joyful sense of exploration – and they are part of the creative output of a four-year-old child. The prodigy in question is Aelita Andre , the girl who has exhibited around the world, been featured in the international press and appeared on major television programs such as 60 Minutes and Today Tonight. She is also a member of NAVA, Australia’s National Association for the Visual Arts. As you would expect from someone with such an impressive biography, Aelita’s art has a raw power that leaves viewers with a majestic impression of pure talent unearthed. Magnificently unrestrained, she channels a curiosity and vivacity so strong that it can easily be felt through her paintings, almost as if it constitutes a tangible force in the world.
