Free Audio Book - Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, The by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

Watson chronicles here some of the more interesting detective cases that he and his good friend, Mr. Sherlock Holmes, have encountered during their association. We see the cases unfold as he does, scratch our heads as does he while the evidence is collected, and then marvel at the impeccable observations, remarkable insight, and doggedness which Holmes displays as he teases apart the tangled clues. Packaged as twelve distinct cases, by the end of this book your own senses of observation and deductive reasoning should be improved. First Page: by I. To Sherlock Holmes she is always THE woman. Ten Buddhist Koans. A Buddhist Koan is a short tale used to nudge people closer toward Zen enlightenment. Since I really appreciate and love these witty little verses, I decided I’d share some of my favorites here. At first, I thought I’d garnish them with some detailed commentary and analysis. Then I realized, the verses are like works of art, there is no wrong interpretation when it comes to these Japanese stories.

So, I’ll still give them some light “analysis”, but not the same kind of deep probing scrutiny I was originally planning One of the distinguishing characteristics of Buddhism which sets it apart from a lot of Western religions: followers are encouraged to alter and change old teachings rather than try to preserve them. PSA: Dasani and Aquafina are TAP WATER. Enjoy your $2.18 toilet H20 [news item] Bottled water and snake oil Jul 31st 2007 From Economist.com Is bottled water proof that consumers are daft?

SO THE emperor really isn’t wearing any clothes. Last week PepsiCo announced that the label on its Aquafina brand of bottled water will soon carry the words “public water source”, instead of simply the innocent looking “P.W.S.”. That’s right: Aquafina is to all intents and purposes tap water. Coca-Cola is under pressure to follow suit with its Dasani brand, though so far it is refusing to do so. No doubt Coca-Cola still remembers what happened in Britain in 2004, when the press made a stink over the fact that Dasani was simply filtered tap water.

Will Pepsi’s new label have a similarly disastrous impact on sales of Aquafina, which is now the market leader in bottled waters in America? Greg Mankiw's Blog. Calculated Risk. Gauti Eggertson and Neil Mehotra have an interesting new paper: A Model of Secular Stagnation, by Gauti Eggertsson and Neil Mehrotra: 1 Introduction During the closing phase of the Great Depression in 1938, the President of the American Economic Association, Alvin Hansen, delivered a disturbing message in his Presidential Address to the Association (see Hansen ( 1939 )).

Economist's View

He suggested that the Great Depression might just be the start of a new era of ongoing unemployment and economic stagnation without any natural force towards full employment. This idea was termed the ”secular stagnation” hypothesis. One of the main driving forces of secular stagnation, according to Hansen, was a decline in the population birth rate and an oversupply of savings that was suppressing aggregate demand.

Soon after Hansen’s address, the Second World War led to a massive increase in government spending effectively end- ing any concern of insufficient demand. Explainer: Why is deflation so harmful? New column: Home. Macroblog. April 10, 2014 Reasons for the Decline in Prime-Age Labor Force Participation As a follow up to this post on recent trends in labor force participation, we look specifically at the prime-age group of 25- to 54-year-olds.

The participation decisions of this age cohort are less affected by the aging population and the longer-term trend toward lower participation of youths because of rising school enrollment rates. In that sense, they give us a cleaner window on responses of participation to changing business cycle conditions. The labor force participation rate of the prime-age group fell from 83 percent just before the Great Recession to 81 percent in 2013. We look at the various reasons people cite for not participating in the labor force from the monthly Current Population Survey.

Those who say they don't want a job because they are disabled have a relatively low propensity to subsequently (re)enter the labor force. By Melinda Pitts, director, Center for Human Capital Studies, 051211a.
