Artist always use things other than for their intended purpose. Meet Jennifer Maestre, a South African-born, Massachusetts-based artist, who makes amazing pencil sculptures. Inspiration My sculptures were originally inspired by the form and function of the sea urchin. Technique To make the pencil sculptures, I take hundreds of pencils, cut them into 1-inch sections, drill a hole in each section (to turn them into beads), sharpen them all and sew them together. We commonly see them in still-life images, or juxtaposed in unexpected surroundings. But Czech photography Vlad Artazov has taken the idea of using simple objects to create striking images one step further with his Nails’ life series.
Using simple building nails, Artazov has recreated situations found in everyday life. Some are rather steamy, others perfectly mundane, but made interesting due to their abstract nature.
