Assembly lines, farms, factories - the machines have taken over millions of man-hours, but now the scientists have surpassed those systems and begun to make themselves obsolete. Because Adam is online - and he's a scientist. UK researchers have hooked up an experiment-designing program to all the automated equipment needed to do its own lab work. This isn't arrays of repetitive tasks, although Adam can do that no problem, this is real science. The Adam system was basically told "go look at yeast" and successfully theorized, experimented, analyzed and refined its results from start to finish. The system is completely self-starting, only needing human fleshbags to bring supplies - and not to sound alarmist, but some day it's going to work out that other machines are far better at that.

Press). So why publish yet another review? Because the popularity of a book whose jacket declares it "dares to suggest that the emperors of strong AI have no clothes" has apparently given some casual observers the impression that Penrose has dealt a death-blow to artificial intelligence (AI). This is not even close to being right. Being read is not the same as being believed. But aren't most of these reviewers fuzzy-headed philosophers of mind and computer science researchers, while Penrose is a good, solid, world-renowned mathematical physicist?
But if appeals to consensus and authority won't persuade you, let's get down to details. Penrose's argument is two-fold. These are amazing claims, which Penrose hardly bothers to defend. Sometimes the AI's problem is that it's not intelligent enough, triggering murderous glitches as in the legendary Golem of Prague or Robocop's ED-209 armed security bot. More often the threat of AI is its dark brilliance, from the blackmail scheme concocted by Frankenstein's self-loathing monster to the grotesque battery-slave camps of The Matrix. The fear of AI is different from concerns over genetic modification, self-replicating nanobots or other potentially slippery technological slopes, says Patrick Lin, an assistant professor of philosophy at California Polytechnic State University, who is developing ethical guidelines for robots for the United States Navy.
