For thirteen days in October 1962 the world waited—seemingly on the brink of nuclear war—and hoped for a peaceful resolution to the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Cuban Missile Crisis

In October 1962, an American U-2 spy plane secretly photographed nuclear missile sites being built by the Soviet Union on the island of Cuba. President Kennedy did not want the Soviet Union and Cuba to know that he had discovered the missiles. He met in secret with his advisors for several days to discuss the problem. After many long and difficult meetings, Kennedy decided to place a naval blockade, or a ring of ships, around Cuba. The aim of this "quarantine," as he called it, was to prevent the Soviets from bringing in more military supplies.

No one was sure h ow Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev would respond to the naval blockade and U.S. demands. Cold War International History Project. DDAY l'Odyssée - Accueil - Réseau Canopé. History of Africa by Kevin Shillingston. History of Africa remains the essential text for anyone with an interest in this remarkable continent and its fascinating past.

History of Africa by Kevin Shillingston

In a single volume, History of Africa offers readers a richly illustrated narrative introduction to the history of the entire continent, from earliest times through to the present day. Building on the book’s established reputation and success, the third edition has been revised and updated throughout in the light of new research and recent events. Kevin Shillington traces the history of the continent through the ancient world to medieval, modern and contemporary Africa. He explores the early emergence of farming; the kingdoms of Ancient Egypt, Aksum and Meroe; medieval empires; the spread and impact of Islam; the role of trade and religion; and the development of Africa’s wide range of pastoral, agricultural and hunting societies. This project is both very large and fairly old in Internet terms. At the time it was instigated (1996), it was not clear that web sites [and the documents made available there] would often turn out to be transient. 2. 3. Manhattan Project

Codenamed "Project Y," the laboratory that designed and fabricated the first atomic bombs began to take shape in spring 1942 when James Conant suggested to Vannevar Bush that the Office of Scientific and Research Development and the Army form a committee to study bomb development. Bush agreed and forwarded the recommendation to Vice President Henry Wallace, Secretary of War Henry Stimson, and General George Marshall (the Top Policy Group). By the time of his appointment in late September, Leslie Groves had orders to set up a committee to study military applications of the bomb.

Groves selected Oppenheimer to head the new laboratory. Next Sources and notes for this page. Mémorial de la Shoah. Musée national de l'histoire de l'immigration. The National Security Archive. United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. World History Resources.
