Oxford University to team up with billionaire on big data health project - BJHC

With the aid of £31m ($50m) worth of seed funding, the new Chan Soon-Shiong Oxford Centre for Molecular Medicine has been set up to support the delivery of individualised, data-driven molecular based medicine for the benefit of NHS cancer patients. The partners say the money will help advance UK clinical cancer care through genomic and proteomic driven diagnoses, powered by what they characterise as large-scale sequencing capabilities based on Big Data and supercomputing technologies. The Centre will also closely collaborate with Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust, said the partners at the press event announcing the deal last week. 25 Amazing Need-to-Know Facts. HDP 2.2 – A Major Step Forward for Enterprise Hadoop

This release incorporates the last six months of innovation and includes more than a hundred new features and closes thousands of issues across Apache Hadoop and its related projects. Our approach at Hortonworks is to enable a Modern Data Architecture with YARN as the architectural center, supported by key capabilities required of an enterprise data platform — spanning Governance, Security and Operations. To this end, we work within the governance model of the Apache Software Foundation contributing to and progressing the individual components from the Hadoop ecosystem and ultimately integrating them into the Hortonworks Data Platform (HDP). Our investment across all these technologies follows the same pattern. A Comprehensive Data Platform. Smart Marketing With Big Data. Top 16 Hadoop Technology Companies. A Move into the Modern Web World: NoSQL + the Enterprise

NoSQL’s advantages over relational technologies in scalability, performance and data model flexibility have been a big reason. Internet and mobile applications developed by Intern companies, defined as company’s whose entire business revolves around the Internet, were the first to adopt NoSQL. Initially it was companies like Google, Facebook, and Amazon that pioneered NoSQL and developed their own technologies internally.

Later it was companies like LinkedIn, Zynga, AOL, and Orbitz that adopted open source technologies like Couchbase, MongoDB, and Cassandra.
