Geoscientists identify seismic activity in Southern Australia including the Flinders Ranges Earthquake Hazzard Map of Australia Australia is not as geologically stable as many think. Despite popular belief, Australia is a geologically active continent with moving fault-lines, regular seismic activity, and a long history of mountain making, said internationally respected geologist, Associate Professor Malcolm Wallace from the School of Earth Sciences at the University of Melbourne. We have discovered substantial evidence of ancient and current mountain building on this continent, and seismic activity which commenced 10 million years ago and continues to this day,” Associate Professor Wallace said.

“Two separate geological studies have concluded that an area from Adelaide to south-east Victoria is seismically active and the next ‘big one’ could endanger lives and infrastructure”. Greg Miskelly for The 7.30 Report Updated Thu 4 Mar 2010, 8:34pm AEDT A species of frog has been found alive in the New South Wales Southern Tablelands, more than 30 years after it was thought to have become extinct. New South Wales Environment Minister Frank Sartor announced this morning the discovery of a population of yellow-spotted bell frogs. The frogs were found in a remote creek on private property in the Southern Tablelands region.

NSW Fisheries field scientist Luke Pearce first spotted an unusually coloured bell frog late last year while conducting a native fish survey. He then alerted his colleague, David Hunter, a frog expert with the state's Environment Department. But it was not until a field visit last month that the pair was able to return to identify the creature as the missing yellow-spotted bell frog. Dr Hunter, who spends up to six months of the year monitoring remote frog populations, told The 7.30 Report's Rebecca Baillie the initial capture was a once-in-a-lifetime event. Dead dugongs a glimpse into the future for Kimberley gas hub | Rachel Siewert. The Australian Greens have called on the Government to further investigate what impact the James Price Point gas hub will have on Kimberley marine life, as dead dugongs continue to wash up on Gladstone Harbour in Queensland, near a LNG facility under construction in the area.

“It is highly likely that the James Price Point development could also adversely impact on dugongs, and other marine animals, in the Kimberley. According to the Government’s own reports, dredging and blasting of seabeds and reefs for the gas hub would lead to a 50km2 ‘marine deadzone’. This is a huge area to take out of an important international marine sanctuary.”, Senator Rachel Siewert, Greens Spokesperson on the Kimberley, Fisheries and Marine said today.

“Dugongs travel up and down the Penninsula and are likely to feed on the patches of seagrass that lie off the coast. The construction of the LNG facility in Glastone includes liquification plants, pipelines and port facilities. Immediate threat to Leadbeater s possum habitat in the Central Highlands - The Wilderness Society. Immediate threat to Leadbeater’s possum habitat in the Central Highlands The Central Highlands, 1 hour to Melbourne’s north, are home to a myriad of wild and wonderful plants and animals. However, after years of bushfires, destructive salvage logging and reckless logging for woodchips to be made into Reflex paper products, creatures such as Victoria’s animal emblem the Leadbeater’s possum, the Spotted-Tail Quoll, the Sooty Owl, and Baw Baw frog are being pushed to the brink of extinction. Click here for more information about the threatened species in this area.

Alarmingly, Special Protection Zones (SPZs) that are designed to preserve the habitat of these endangered species are not always adhered to. The broad forest area which the coupes lie in is a treasure trove of different forest types, including senescent Mountain Ash old growth, mature Ash forest, cool temperate rain forest and maturing regrowth Mountain Ash forest of varying ages.
