The monument The National Wallace Monument (generally known as the Wallace Monument) is a tower standing on the summit of Abbey Craig, a hilltop near Stirling in Scotland. It commemorates Sir William Wallace, the 13th century Scottish hero.[1] National Wallace Monument and Ochil Hills in Autumn. The tower was constructed following a fundraising campaign, which accompanied a resurgence of Scottish national identity in the 19th century. The tower stands on the Abbey Craig, a volcanic crag above Cambuskenneth Abbey, from which Wallace was said to have watched the gathering of the army of King Edward I of England, just before the Battle of Stirling Bridge. A minibus courtesy service operates between The Car Park and The Monument. The galleries within the Monument, and the Crown at the top of the building, are accessed via a spiral staircase, with a total of 246 steps. That sword is indeed very impressive…I would not have liked to be pierced through by it…yikes! Not less impressive is Wallace Monument. You can see it from far afield, standing on the summit of Abbey Craig, when you visit the region. Designed by John T Rochhead it took 8 years to complete it. The victorian gothic style highly ornate tower is 220 feet high. A stunning monument and a mythic place too !!! Those who have stamina enough can climb the 242 steps which lead to a platform, named The The National Wallace Monument Crown. The weather was very wintry the day when we visited the monument and Jean-Claude was the only one to climb up to the top where he took many photos. Hall of Scottish Heroes I spent a lot of time in this room filled with fine marble busts sculptures of Scottish well known heroes and really enjoyed reading about the donors and unveilers.
