The British nationalist presenter used the rallying event, held outside Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium, to proudly announce the latest incredibly important person to sign his petition – Sam Warburton. Warburton now joins the likes of Gloria Hunniford, Sir Cliff Richard, Neil ‘Foxy’ Fox and Lord Jock Stirrup on the list of celebrity supporters who have thrown their weight behind the ‘no’ campaign for the Scottish referendum. Sam Warbuton, the Welsh rugby captain, was involved in a Twitter spat earlier in the year over comments he made about his Britishness. BBC propagandist, Dan Snow, may have been disappointed with the number attending the event but the weather in the capital was a little windy. Dan SnowdevolutionReferendumScotlandWales.

Major boost as Unison representatives sign declaration of support for independence. Referring to the report, the members” declaration says: “We believe that through self-determination we can begin to tackle inequality and create a Fairer Scotland whose human and natural assets will be used for the benefit of all rather than profit for a few.”

Major boost as Unison representatives sign declaration of support for independence

The declaration is published to coincide today with Ed Miliband visit to Scotland. Labour members are among the signatories, demonstrating that more and more members believe a Yes vote can provide opportunities for the party and the trade union movement, as well as society as a whole. Stephen Smellie, Deputy Convenor of Unison Scotland and Trade Union Liaison Officer for his local constituency Labour Party, said: “The kind of Labour Party we need to champion the interests of working people is more likely to develop in an independent Scotland than in the current UK. The Scottish trade unions have it in their power to make sure this happens.”

Edinburgh A century ago, with Britain in peril, Lord Kitchener’s stern countenance demanded that every stout-hearted Briton do their bit for King and Country.

Alex Salmond is within striking distance of victory. Why hasn’t England noticed?

‘Your country needs you’ rallied hundreds of thousands to khaki and the Kaiser’s War. Today, with Britain in peril again, you could be forgiven for asking where Kitchener’s successor is. A new recruiting poster might cry: ‘Britons: Wake up! Pay attention! The battle for Britain is being conducted on a wavelength which unionist politicians in London struggle to pick up. It is easy to assume, in England, that Salmond is sunk. If momentum is with the nationalists, so is organisational muscle. Unionists raise procedural, legalistic difficulties such as the precise nature of an independent Scotland’s relationship with the European Union, or how much representation, if any, Salmond should expect on the board of the Bank of England. Real Scots vote ‘yes’; timid Scots vote ‘no’ — and doubtless, in time, will fill a coward’s grave. Editorial: This pluralist Yes campaign is a new kind of politics. To the untrained eye, the campaign for independence is still struggling to find its feet.

Editorial: This pluralist Yes campaign is a new kind of politics

Stagnant polling and Olympics mania has given the No campaign a swagger that eventually bubbled over into full-blown chauvinism with Ian Davidson’s outburst on Newsnight Scotland last week. In the few areas of Davidson’s brain that do anything other than collect dust, the attitude is clear: Not only are Scots disallowed from making any movement towards constitutional change without the express permission of Westminster, but anybody who even ventures the possibility of an alternative arrangement must be biased. Davidson’s rant, dealt with admirably by host Isobel Fraser, illustrated a sad reality of the No campaign: Scottish Labour, and their unionist allies in the Liberal Democrats and Conservatives, have learned nothing from their shared electoral disappointments of 2011 and 2012.

Two examples: firstly, the Olympics and the social union. It’s that pluralism that is our real advantage. Siol nan Gaidheal - The Scottish Cultural & Fraternal Organisation. Copyright 1995 - 2012. Scottish Democratic Alliance - dedicated to re-energising Scotland.
