Ultravox. Ultravox are a British new wave band, best known for a series of top ten single and album hits in the UK charts during the 1980s. The band has been led by two different frontmen who never played together in the band at the same time. From 1974 until 1979, John Foxx was frontman and main driving force behind Ultravox. Foxx left the band to embark on a solo career. Following Foxx's departure, with the three remaining members in hiatus, Midge Ure took over as lead singer, guitarist, and frontman. Ure revitalised the band and drove it to commercial success lasting until the mid-1980s. Ure left the band in 1987 after establishing a solo career and the group disbanded for a while. A new line-up, led by sole original band member keyboard player/violinist Billy Currie, was formed in 1992, but achieved little success. Becoming Ultravox[edit] The Midge Ure years: 1979–1988[edit] Midge Ure. James "Midge" Ure, OBE (born 10 October 1953) is a Scottish musician and singer-songwriter. His stage name, Midge, is a phonetic reversal of Jim, the diminutive form of his real name. In 1985, Ure had a UK number one solo single with the song "If I Was". Career[edit] Early years[edit] Born to a working-class family in Cambuslang, Lanarkshire, Scotland, he attended Cambuslang Primary School and Rutherglen Academy in Glasgow until he was 15 years old.

For the first 10 years of his life he lived in a one-bedroom tenement flat on the outskirts of Glasgow with his brother, sister and his parents.[3] After leaving school Ure attended Technical College and then began to work as an engineer, training at the National Engineering Laboratory, (NEL), in nearby East Kilbride.[4] He started playing music in a Glasgow band called Stumble (c. 1969 – c. 1971), that included a girl-singing duet, Christine and Agnes. Salvation, Slik and PVC2[edit] Ure joined Salvation as a guitarist in 1972. Rich Kids[edit] Midge Ure. Ultravox. Ultravox - Vienna (With Spiders!) Ultravox - Dancing With Tears In My Eyes. The first three LP releases feature the vocals of John Foxx (Dennis Leigh), while the rest of the line up of Billy Currie, Warren Cann and Chris Cross were joined by Stevie Shears on guitar for the first two and Robin Simon replacing Shears for the third album, Systems of Romance, by which the group had dropped the exclamation mark from the band name.

In 1979, John Foxx left after an American tour to pursue solo projects, with Simon also departing. Currie, Cross and Cann were subsequently joined by Midge Ure on vocals and guitar who had been working with their mutual friend Rusty Egan, as part of the group Visage. This became the most successful and well-known, 'classic' 80s line-up. They recorded 10 (UK) Top Twenty singles and 7 (UK) Top Twenty Albums, among them single hits such as 'Vienna', 'Hymn' or 'Dancing With Tears In My Eyes'. Billy Currie gained the rights to the Ultravox name and recorded an album with new singer / guitarist and Tony Fenelle. Ultravox. The song, featuring its moody dry-ice filled black and white video, was originally kept off the top spot by novelty track Shaddap You Face by the US-born Australian Joe Dolce. But the song, released in January 1981, has now triumphed in a national poll by Radio 2 and the Official Charts Company to find the greatest track to narrowly miss out on the top slot. It was a poll to find the greatest song to miss the top of the UK singles chart, organised by BBC Radio 2 and the Official Charts Company. 'Vienna' was released in January 1981, and despite huge radio play and massive sales, it wasn't enough to outdo novelty track 'Shaddup You Face' by US-born Australian Joe Dolce. Perhaps destined to always be No 2, 's single Fairytale Of New York came second on the poll. The poll was launched to celebrate 60 years of the singles chart, and DJ Tony Blackburn will play the whole Top 40 of No 2s on his three-hour New Year's Day show, The Nation's Favourite Number Two Single.

"A huge thanks to everyone who took the time and effort to vote for 'Vienna'. 2 – The Pogues feat. Ultravox Merchandise.
