All in all the erection of the statue was a highly commendable achievement of the people of Paisley in their attempt to honour the memory of their National Bard, but why did the Paisley public go to so much trouble to produce what is often thought to be the World’s finest memorial to the poet, when he hailed from so many miles away in Ayrshire?

Paisley's Burns Statue

Paisley’s attachment to Burns goes back a very long way indeed, and many Burns’s many connections to the town are well known. Jean Armour, Burns’s eventual wife was sent to stay there with her uncle, Andrew Purdie, during her first confinement. Paisley was always a town in the forefront of the appreciation of the Bard’s works, and in 1805 a group of local poets, including Paisley’s own bard Robert Tannahill formed one of the world’s first Burns Clubs, meeting for the first time in January 1805 at the Starr Inn, 29 High Street, to celebrate the anniversary of the poet’s birth.

The Sculptor ....... The Statue The Unveiling ...... Researched by Past President I J Dickson ** Scroll down for sketches and a photo from 1896 ** and (if you wish) the extras offered by the little mouse The Donor John Spiers left Irvine as a young man and enjoyed a long, successful and, equally importantly, honourable career as an underwriter and insurance broker at Blythswood Sq., Glasgow. His gift of a statue was motivated by what he had been told, in his young days in Irvine, by people who had known the poet, so in a sense the statue is a personal testament from one who had heard at first hand of Burns' generous character, great genius and noble humanity.

John Spiers also showed his awareness of people's more immediate needs. The whole life of John Spiers was marked by commercial probity and thought for others. The Sculptor The Statue. In December 1985 the Council's newspaper The Bulletin reported that Glasgow and District Burns Association had agreed to donate 100 annually towards the cost of maintenance of the statue. The statue to Scotland's national poet was erected on 25 January 1877, 118 years after the birth of Burns. 10,000 people are said to have formed a procession from Glasgow Green to attend the unveiling, with as many as 30,000 lining the streets. The bronze statue is the work of sculptor George Edwin Ewing, and was cast by London art founders Cox & Sons. Four bronze reliefs by the sculptor's brother, James Alexander Ewing, depict scenes from the bard's poems.

A committee was formed to organize this in 1819 at the Free Mason's Tavern in London. In 1824 sculptor John Flaxman R.A., one of the finest sculptors of the day, was commissioned to produce a life-size statue in marble. He used the portrait of Burns by Alexander Nasmyth as a model. The poet is shown holding a bunch of daisies and reciting his poem ‘To a mountain daisy’, a bonnet and thistle lie at his feet beside a plough-share. Burns, by John Flaxman, Edinburgh. Burns Monument. Regent Road Calton Hill EdinburghEH Re-opened in 2009 following extensive restoration work, this is more than a monument, it's a small, circular temple in the Neo-Greek style typical of Georgian era Edinburgh, constructed in honour of Scotland's national bard Robert Burns (1759 to 1796).

Burns Monument

The Burns monument is on Regent Road at the Southerly foot of Calton Hill looking out to Arthur's seat in Holyrood Park (not to be confused with the Burns Monument Centre in Kay Park, Kilmarnock, Ayrshire). The foundation stone of the Edinburgh Burns Monument was laid in 1831. It was designed by Thomas Hamilton, who was also responsible for the Royal High School just across the road.

The building originally housed a white marble statue of the poet - that's now in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery. Historical Background The idea to erect a monument to Burns was first proposed by Mr. The temple consists of a central drum structure called a 'cella', surrounded by twelve columns known as a 'peristyle'. This Statue, I must confess, is magnificent to see, And I hope will long be appreciated by the people of Dundee; It has been beautifully made by Sir John Steell, And I hope the pangs of hunger he will never feel.

This statue is most elegant in its design, And I hope will defy all weathers for a very long time; And I hope strangers from afar with admiration will stare On this beautiful statue of thee, Immortal Bard of Ayr. Fellow-citizens, this Statue seems most beautiful to the eye, Which would cause Kings and Queens for such a one to sigh, And make them feel envious while passing by In fear of not getting such a beautiful Statue after they die.
