RABBIE BURNS fans fear centuries of tradition will be lost if his statue is moved in the controversial revamp of Glasgow’s George Square. Burns clubs from the Glasgow and District Association have laid wreaths at the foot of the poet’s statue in an annual ceremony on the Saturday closest to his birthday since 1877. But the 136-year-old celebration has now been cast into doubt after Glasgow City Council invited new designs for the square’s £15million makeover.

A decision was postponed last week after the committee choosing a winner from the six-strong shortlist could not reach a decision. Sources suggest the list will be scrapped as critics demand the whole process is halted to canvas the views of the public.
