Coda is everything you need to hand-code a website, in one beautiful app. While the pitch is simple, building Coda was anything but. How do you elegantly wrap everything together?

Well, we did it. And today, Coda has grown to be a critical tool for legions of web developers around the world. More than anything else, Coda is a text editor. It’s got everything you expect: syntax highlighting for tons of languages. But an incredible text editor is just a nice typewriter if you can’t easily handle all of your files — from anywhere. Then you’ll want to see what your code looks like. Believe it or not, we’ve just scratched the surface. Finally, hiding behind the Plus button in the tab bar is a built-in Terminal and MySQL editor, two amazingly powerful Tab Tools.

And it’s all wrapped up in our Sites, which get you started quickly. Coda is a very good app. Ars Technica. Elementary-group-standards. Devshed. GPS. Webassist. Positioniseverything. CNET. Apptools. In the beginning, the Internet, and more specifically the world wide web, was a way of exchanging information between universities and government agencies. The Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) was developed to accommodate exchanging documents between different computer systems where most existing document types would be incompatible with the different computer systems.

These documents were largely text and there was no need for any complicated layout mechanism. HTML used tags to define what various objects were on the page and let the user's browser to decide how to present it. In HTML, the document content flows from left to right and top to bottom. There were no provisions for positioning objects at some specific point on the page. There was simply no need for it. Well, that was then. Using Layers About now, if you weren't already familiar with absolute positioning, you'd be saying "WOW! Sorry for that bit of geek-speak. The Problems with Layers Overlapping text WOW again!!!

It applies to elements whose float property has the value none, and whose position property has the value static or relative, although in the latter case, additional factors described in Relative Positioning must be taken into consideration. As we already saw in CSS Layout and Formatting, just as there are block-level elements and inline elements in HTML, CSS boxes are also either block or inline (although there are subtypes of each), as determined by the element’s display property value. The values block, list-item, and table will cause an element to generate a block box and participate in a block formatting context.1 Other values, such as inline and inline-table, cause elements to generate inline boxes, which participate in an inline formatting context. The value run-in is special, because it can make the generated box’s formatting either block or inline.

We all know the problems that arise when we try to build multi-column layouts in which the columns are of equal height. It has been well documented elsewhere, so I won’t go into the details here. A project I recently worked on required an elastic layout with two columns of equal height, each with a different background color. As usual, there was no way to tell which column would be taller. I immediately thought of Dan Cederholm’s Faux Columns, but I needed an elastic layout. I also looked at the One True Layout, but this seemed buggy and required too much extra markup and too many hacks for my taste. I even thought about using JavaScript to make sure the columns were of equal height, but that just felt wrong. Out of desperation, I almost (gasp!) But no, there had to be a better way. If this sounds familiar, that’s probably because a version of this method was introduced by Douglas Livingstone and extended by Holly Bergevin and John Gallant at Position Is Everything.
