Iraq's mainly continental climate brings a wide range of temperature, with hot summers, particularly in the south, and cold winters, especially on the higher ground. In the mountainous region of the north, summers can be a little cooler and humidity is lower than in the south. During the winter months (October to April) snow often falls on the mountains. In the central areas of Iraq, summers are much hotter, with temperatures in Baghdad rising to about 33.3 o C (92 F) in July and August. It is not unknown for temperatures to soar as high as 50.6 o C (123 F) in this region. Winter in Baghdad brings a mean temperature of about 9.4 o C (49 F).Market developments lay the foundation for future growth Despite developing in leaps and bounds in post-war Iraq, the telecoms industry still holds much growth potential. The main story of telecommunications in Iraq continues to be mobile. Prior to the 2003 Iraq war mobile telecoms did not exist in most of Iraq outside the Kurdish areas. Since then mobile penetration has reached levels indicative of market maturity. Four operators share the market but Zain of Kuwait’s subsidiary Zain Iraq has much the largest market share, with well over 50% of the market.
