The humanitarian catastrophe in Pakistan may be leading to a diplomatic and political catastrophe in Europe, where eye-witness accounts of the alleged failure of the Pakistan government to help victims efficiently has led M Sarkozy to demand that Europe do more to help humanitarian organizations which are trying to improve the situation. France has sent a planeload of aid consisting of 60 tonnes of tarpaulin shelters, water tanks, blankets, temporary shelters and water purification tablets, and Europe has already set aside €40m for aid purposes. France says arms sale to Pakistan held up.
